CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Education plays a big role in the lives of

people. It holds important characteristics in
shaping the future and it serves as a key for all
Filipinos to become full pledge, productive members
of society. Education is a learning process where
the students can learn and acquire knowledge from
their teachers and fellow learners. According to
Yunus (1990), education is a total effort that is
deliberately chosen to influence and assist
children to imparting knowledge, physical and moral
that can gradually deliver the child to its highest
goal.

On March 11 2020, The WORLD HEALTH

ORGANIZATION (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a global
pandemic. As the viruses spread in the country, it
also affect the lives of many Filipino, especially
the lives of the students. All the students worried
that they may not come back to normal classes. But
the Government though of brilliant ways for
students to continue their studies even at home.

The DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (DepEd)

implemented different modes of learning amidst of
COVID-19 pandemic. The online learning and modular
distance learning. Students still have the
opportunity to learn even in their homes. The fact
that not all students understand their modules
easily, it affected their academic performance.
It’s hard for them, also for their parents who
helped them answer their modules. Unlike in Face-
to-face classes, they can easily pick up the
lessons that their teachers explaining in front of
them which improves their academic performance.

When Face-to Face classes is back, the students

get excited because they will experience the normal
classes again. But there are still difficulties
that students encountered when Face-to-Face classes
back. Transportation, time management, expenses and
adapting to a new environment are common problems
of every student. Not everyone is blessed to have
their vehicles. Many students need to transport
from their home that is far from school. They also
need to adapt to a new environment, because unlike
in Modular Distance Learning the time they want to
answer their modules is dependent upon them . While
in Face-to-face classes, there is allotted time to
take every subject.

Moreover, Macatoc National High School is one

of the institutions applying Modular Distance
Learning to provide and ensure all students have
access to their education. However, students in
both Modular Distance Learning and Face-to-Face
classes environment have seemingly numerous ways of
learning outcomes. Thus, the researchers aimed to
compare the students’ academic performance in
Modular Distance Learning and Face-to-Face classes.
The researchers come up with the title “Modular
Distance Learning and Face-to-Face classes in
Academic performance of GRADE-12 students from
Macatoc National High School”.
Statement of the Problem

The researchers generally aimed to determine

the difference in academic performance between
Modular Distance Learning and Face-to-Face classes
of GRADE-12 students from Macatoc National High
School

Especially the study aimed to determine the

following:

1. What are the impact of Modular Distance Learning

in terms of :

1.1 Academic performance

1.2 Mental Health

1.3 Time management

1.4 Expenses

2. What are the impacts of Face to Face classes in

terms of:

2.1 Academic performance

2.2 Mental Health

2.3 Time management

2.4 Expenses

3. Is there any significant difference between

Modular Distance Learning and Face to Face classes?

Hypothesis
There is a significant difference between Face-to-Face
classes and Modular Distance Learning for GRADE-12 students
from Macatoc National High School.

Scope and Delimitation

This study covers GRADE-12 students of Macatoc National

High School for the School Year 2022-2023. This will focus
on the difference between Modular Distance Learning and
Face-to-Face classes.

Significance of Study

Discovering the difference between Face to Face classes

and Modular Distance Learning will be a great help to the
following:

Students. The results of this study will help them realize

the difference of Face to Face classes and Modular Distance
Learning in their Academic performance, time management,
Mental health and expenses and how they will be able to
adapt and improve them.

Teachers. This will give the basis to know how big the
difference in Academic performance of students between
Modular Distance Learning and Face to Face classes and what
possible programs they should implement to improve or help
the students in their academic performance.

Parents. This will give them knowledge on how they can help,
guide, and pay more attention to their children in doing
school activities and performance tasks.

Future Researcher. This research will be a useful reference

for other researchers who will make research that is related
or similar to this study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To facilitate understanding of this study the following

terms are defined operationally and or conceptually:

Academic performance – The measurement of students'

achievement across various academic subjects. It measures
using classroom performance and result from standardized
tests.

Modular Distance Learning – A learning set up that the

Department of Education implemented during the COVID-19
pandemic. The teachers prepared hard copies of the modules
or lessons and they will send them to every student so they
continue studying even they if are inside their homes.

Face-to-Face – This is where the students and teachers has

face-to-face interaction. The teachers set time for every
subjects for the whole day and they are the one who are
explaining the lessons to their students.

Mental Health- Psychological health status of a person

includes their emotions and the stress they encountered

Expenses – The money that the students spend on their

projects, transportation, and allowance.

Time management- Is the technique of making plans and

exercising aware management of time spent on precise
activities, mainly to increase effectiveness, efficiency,
and productivity.
