Case study 01

Workplace violence

Contemporary management
Problem definition:

This case study addresses the problem of workplace violence by

analyzing two actual incidents which took place at two renowned
multinational firms, which are “DaimlerChrysler’s Toledo, Ohio,
assembly plant” and “Lockheed Martin”.

Problem Definition
The lack of adequate policies, procedures, and actions to prevent
violence in the workplace at
Daimler-Chrysler despite the fact that workplace violence is a
common problem in the US and
has claimed lives of employees just two years before at Lockheed
Martin.

Justification of the problem:

Failure to take workplace antiviolence measures by the Daimler-

Chryslers administration.

The period where Myles Meyers walked into the plant with his
double-barrel shotgun until he successfully was able to shoot his
target collogues, there weren’t any signs of an employee security
measures or a procedure where employees could be warned in
case of emergency.

Walking in with large weapon into the workplace shows that there
was no security at the entrance of the plant where supposedly
several hundreds of employees’ work.

List of alternatives:
There are several ways of security can be taken before the
incident that could have helped preventing the incident and saved
lives of employees

(1)
Develop internal policies and procedures to deal with workplace
violence, harassment and safety.

(2)
Apply a high professional security system.

(3)
Design and apply a training program for all employees to educate
them about workplace violence and to help them deal with such
incidents.

(4)
selecting new employees while giving a considerable attention to
candidate personality and psychological state, where interviewers
are requested to conduct interviews that allow an evaluator to
determine the true personality of applicants. Since personality
characteristics remain consistent over the lifetime of most healthy
individuals, a pattern of behavior can be discerned. Have a
thorough background check conducted to evaluate past
employment history, criminal record, education, experience,
training, military service, credit history, and inquiries regarding
general character and reputation

Evaluate alternatives:
**One of the best protections employers can offer their workers is
to establish policies toward workplace violence. This policy should
cover all (workers, patients, clients, visitors, contractors, and
anyone else who may come in contact with company personnel).

**Its mandatory for the company to examine whether workers are

treated well, not in ways that are meaningful to the employees. Do
mangers treat Myles well with respect? Is reasonable support
provided to Myles who maybe having difficulties on or off the job?
Are the rules governing sick leave, tardiness, and other aspects of
the workday strict, or they are rigid?
Company officials to ask whether they are doing enough to
balance their production goals with the physical, psychological,
and emotional needs of their employees, who are handsomely
paid but frequently work six and seven days in an environment
where overtime is often mandatory.

**Program designed to orient the employees and increase their

awareness of the workplace violence, how to anticipate, handle
and report it. As it's shown in the case (Meyers) reported to Martin
that he will shout three and himself.
DaimlerChrysler’s Toledo should work to make sure employees
are trained in techniques can help them prevent or escape violent
scenarios.

**Companies that do not conduct thorough background screenings

on potential employees run the risk of hiring someone who could
be prone to violence or has a violent past. Although many
companies are using psychological and psychometric tests during
the hiring process in an attempt to weed out the potentially violent
candidates, the test is not full-proof and should not be substituted
for a thorough background check, but it is used as an indicator and
minimizes any risk in the future.

Recommendations:

having read the case study and evaluating the alternatives, I would
recommend applying alternative 1 and 3 respectively.
Employees who experienced workplace violence would like to gain
confidence and feel safe and secure in the workplace is basic
need and right for employees thus applying a high professional
security system mean while developing a set of policies and
procedures concerning this basic need would be safe.

Having read the case study and

evaluating the alternatives, I
would recommend applying
alternatives 2, and 1
respectively. Employees whom
experienced horrifying
workplace violence
would like to gain confidence
and feel safe so they could
pursue their work again.
