Discussion text: Social Media

Explanation
Discussion text is a text which presents a problematic discourse. This problem will be
discussed from different viewpoints. Discussion is commonly found in philosophical,
historic, and social text. In other words, Discussion is a kind of genre used to present (at
least) two points of view about an issue.

Purpose of Discussion text

– To present two points of view about an issue or problem.
– To present arguments from different points of view about an issue or problem..

Social Function
The function of this type of text is to describe problems based on different opinions or views.

General structure of Discussion Text

– Issue : stating the issue which is to discussed
– Argument pro : presenting the point in in supporting the presented issue
– Argument cons : presenting other points which disagree to the supporting point
– Conclusion / recommendation : stating the writer’ recommendation of the discourse

Language feature of Discussion text

– Using thinking verb; feel, hope, believe, etc
– Using contrastive conjunction; however, on the other hand, but, in other side, although, etc
– Using modalities; must, should, could, may, etc
– Using adverbial of manner; deliberately, hopefully, etc
– Simple present

Social Media

The term social media refers to a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of
ideas, thoughts, and information through virtual networks and communities. Social media is
internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content, such as personal
information, documents, videos, and photos. Users engage with social media by a computer,
tablet, or smartphone via web-based software or applications. Social media has both positive
and negative impacts.
There are a lot of positive impacts of social media, for example: First, Kids who feel really
self-conscious and nervous about being their true selves in their school/home or who are
struggling with depression or anxiety but don’t know how to talk about it with their families
and other friends, can find a particularly strong sense of support from the “safe” anonymity of
social media communities. Second, Teens use social media to stay rooted in optimism and
inspiration by posting something they’re grateful for daily, looking for inspirational quotes or
images, and also following hashtags and people that do something similar. Third, It allows
them to spread social awareness and kindness. One of the reasons why teenagers are on social
media is so they can search for new information on people, explore new ideas, express
themselves the way they want to, and connect with others all over the world. Social media
can be a great platform for them to start campaigning for their rights and the rights of other
people.
The negative impacts of social media for teens and children are they will feel addicted and do
not care about time, do not care about the surroundings, lack of socialization with the
environment, waste of money, often social media can be a place where fraud can be occured,
and social media can damage the health of the eye of children or people who use them.
In conclusion, social media has positive and negative impacts on society. It just depends on
how we manage social media to benefit us. And children should have parents watching by
their side when using social media to prevent unwanted accidents.
