COWLING - ATS VENT GRILLE

Description

Embreaer (HEAI) quality assurance team found an aircraft in

production line with the ATS vent grille assembled in wrong
orientation

Investigation

The non-conform parts had the honeycomb glued to the frame in

the opposite orientation (quality escape originated at Hurel –
AERnnova supplier)
Flight
Direction

Correct Incorrect
IN SERVICE ISSUES

COWLING - ATS VENT GRILLE

Solution

AERnnova mitigated this quality escape in production line

Embraer and AERnnova purged theirs warehouses from non-

conform parts

SB 145-54-0012-REV.01 and 145LEG-54-0005-REV.01 were

issued to inspect and, if required, replace the ATS vent grille

SB effectivity (ERJ-145 family, Legacy 600 and Shuttle): All

aircraft up to 14501109

Factory incorporated for S/N 14501110 and on

IN SERVICE ISSUES

FQI - BLACKENED TERMINALS

Description

Reports about discoloration of the sleeve around the terminal of

the Fuel Quantity Indication System (FQIS) harnesses

Some operators noticed this blackened area and they assumed

it was an evidence of overheating
IN SERVICE ISSUES

FQI - BLACKENED TERMINALS

Investigation

In order to compare the discoloration with overheating condition, it

was intentionally overheated/burnt a controlled sample on
laboratory by applying excess of electrical current

An analysis of the dark-colored wires was then performed to

determine the nature of the dark coloration and it was concluded
that such spectrum did not match with the dark residue (field
events)

Conclusion

There is no need to replace the FQIS harnesses if the findings are

limited to the discoloration issue

SNL145-28-0017 was release in order to provide the operators

with guidelines in case of blackened area on FQIS harnesses is
found

ENG INLET – LIPSKIN CORROSION

Description

Premature pitting corrosion observed along the engine air inlet

(lipskin surface)

Solution
Identified quality escape, according to SNL 145-71-0004
Approved Xzillon 3 (Granitize) to be applied on mirror-finished
surfaces
Immediately after polishing (refer to AMM II 51-21-01-7)
Prolonged parking (refer to AMM II 10-10-02/2)
IN SERVICE ISSUES

FUEL SOV – RELIABILITY ISSUES

Description

The reliability metrics of the Fuel SOV are indicating that the
number of removals increased

Typical gate-type fuel SOV, common to the ERJ-145 family

The SOV fits 14 different positions in the Legacy 600 and 5

positions in the Shuttle
IN SERVICE ISSUES

FUEL SOV – RELIABILITY ISSUES

Investigation

Analyzed 40 valves removed between 2009 and 2010

73% failed in auxiliary tank vent valve position

In majority of failures in field, the motors were found “weak”, “have

a noisy signal trace”, intermittent” or “failed”

The motors deficiencies were a result of silicone contamination

originating from the silicone oil used to lubricate the bearings on
the motor

Figure 1 – Torque motor - Commutator bars Figure 2 – Commutator bars – Contamination traces
IN SERVICE ISSUES

FUEL SOV – RELIABILITY ISSUES

Investigation (cont’d)

The silicone oil migrates from bearing and form deposits with the
graphite brush residue on the motor commutator bars preventing
good electrical contact

Valves in position with higher cycling

are less susceptible to failure, because
the operation wipes the deposits from
the graphite brush

Conclusion: Replace the existing motor by a new one (silicone free)

IN SERVICE ISSUES

FUEL SOV – RELIABILITY ISSUES

Solution

Positions more susceptible to fail (auxiliary vent valves)

SB145LEG-28-0033 released in Aug/2011 - FOC

Remaining positions – Upgrade on attrition basis

Motor related failure under warranty (3 years): FOC

Non-motor related failure under warranty: USD 3,000.00

(reduced price)

New SOV will be introduced in the next IPC revision (estimated to

4Q2011)

Released the PIL 145-28-0023 in Aug/2011

HSD x TELEPHONE INTERFERENCE

Description
Field reports informing that the telephone (Iridium) system is
being affected by interference from the HSD (Inmarsat) system
Difficulty to complete calls when the HSD is in operation
Calls dropping-off when the HSD is transmitting

Internet antenna Telephone antennas

Iridium constellation: 66 low-orbit satellites

Inmarsat constellation: 3 or 4 high-orbit satellites
IN SERVICE ISSUES

HSD x TELEPHONE INTERFERENCE

Investigation
Operational spectrum of the Iridium and the Inmarsat are
marginal, consequently nuisances may interfere in each other
operation
Due to characteristic of the Iridium network, the telephone is more
susceptible to fail due to this interference, resulting in telephone
inoperability

IN SERVICE ISSUES

HSD x TELEPHONE INTERFERENCE

Investigation (cont’d)
This solution was tested in aircraft equipped with Honeywell HSD
showing satisfactory results
The preferred line was used for 2 hour and no discrepancies
The preferred line was not susceptible to interference as it does
not compete with the Internet system
IN SERVICE ISSUES

IN SERVICE ISSUES

HSD x TELEPHONE INTERFERENCE

Solution
From S/N 1132 and on, the aircraft are being delivered with
preferred line #1 connected to the voice channel of SDU
Embraer is performing further tests to validate this solution with

IN SERVICE ISSUES

PAX CABIN - LED FLICKERING

Investigation
Some affected LED tracks were sent back to supplier (EMTEQ)
for analysis
A quality escape on the LED production was identified, however,
there are no effective means to isolate the affected batches
The LEDs installed on the S/N 965 to 1110 may present this
symptom

Solution
It is recommended that customers which are facing this LED
flickering issue to contact his Field Support Representative in
order to schedule the replacement of the entire LED kit P/N
LEGACYELWK-503
IN SERVICE ISSUES

PAX CABIN - LED FLICKERING

Solution (cont’d)
There is one kit available in FLL to support the US fleet
There will be no Service Bulletin for this replacement
It is done thru IPC, upon kit availability
Aircraft S/N 1111 and on are equipped with B/E Aerospace LED
which is not susceptible to this flickering issue
EMTEQ and B/E Aerospace LEDs are not interchangeable

IN SERVICE ISSUES

PAX HANDRAIL - PEELING-OFF

Probable Causes
Premature chromium peeling-off may be an evidence of quality
escape
Some products induce damages on chrome plating
Chlorine-based products, degreasing solvents and abrasives
Calcium chloride applied on runways to prevent ice formation

Solution
The recommendation, for aesthetic reasons, is the part
