“A SHIP IN A STORM”.
UNIVERSITY OF
PERPETUAL HELP
SYSTEM DALTA
Did you ever go far out into the great ocean? How beautiful it is to be out at sea when the sea is smooth and still! When a storm
approaches, the scene changes. The heavy, black clouds appear in the distance and throw a deep, long shade over the world of waters. The captain
and sailors soon see in the clouds the dark signs. All hands are then set to work to take in sail. The hoarse notes of the captain, speaking through his
trumpet, are echoed across the ship. They’ll be happy if all is made snug before the gale strikes the vessel. At last, the gale comes like a vast moving
mountain of air. It strikes the ship. The vessel heaves and groans under the dreadful weight and struggles to escape through the foaming waters. If she
is far out at sea, she will be likely to ride out the storm in safety. But if the wind is driving her upon the shore, the poor ship may hit the rocks. Once
there was a ship in a storm. Some of her masts were already broken, and her sails lost. While the wind was raging, and the billows wee dashing
against her, the cry was heard, “A man has fallen over board!” The rescue boat was lowered quickly, and it was soon seen bounding on its way over
the mountain of waves. At one moment, the boat seemed lifted to the skies , and the next , it sank down and appeared to be lost beneath the waves!

Finally, the man was found. He had almost drowned, but he was taken on board, and now they made for the ship. The ship rolled so
dreadfully that it seemed certain the boat wouldn’t make it to the ship. Now, what should they do? The captain told one of the men to go aloft and
throw down a rope. This was tied fast to the boat, and when the sea was somewhat calm, the rescue boat was hoisted and landed on the ship with a
dreadful crash. It was a desperate way of getting on board, but fortunately everyone was safe. On the dangerous points along our seacoast are
lighthouses which can be seen far out at sea and serve as guides to ships. Sometimes the fog is so dense that these lights cannot be seen, but most
lighthouses have great fog bell s or fog horns; some of the latter are made to sound by steam and can be heard for a long distance. These bells and
horns keep sounding as long as the fog lasts. There are also many life-saving stations along the coast where trained men are ready with lifeboats.
When a ship is driven ashore, they at once go to the rescue of those on board, and this way many valuable lives are saved. A sailor’s life is a very
hard one. Our young friends owe a debt of gratitude to those whose home is upon the great waters, and who bring them the luxuries of other
countries.

1. Based on the short story, what is a gale?

a. a very strong wind.
b. A name of a person
c. A type of bird
2. Why do light houses use fog bells?
a. To provide an audible warning of rock outcrops, shoals, headlands, or other dangers to shipping
b. To help create and preserve memories of historical and/or sentimental value.
c. To move people and cargo from one place to another.
3. Why is it safer for a ship to be in a storm when it is far out at sea?
a. Because it can prove how strong the ship is when out in the open.
b. Because safest place for a ship during a storm is out at sea because the ship is a safe distance from anything it might crash into.
c. Because the sailors will not sleep if they are right there in the storm.
4. From the story that you have read, choose an example about why , as the passage says , “ A sailor’s life is a hard one . ”
a. They lift heavy things and starve when there is no food.
b. They couldn’t sleep because of the big waves.
c. They sacrifice a lot for their family in order for them to have a luxurious life.

“SEDNA THE SEA GODDESS”.

Sedna was a beautiful Aeta girl who didn’t want to get married. Many hunters wanted to marry her, but she refused their offers. Her father
scolded her, saying, “I am getting older, and soon you will need a good husband who can provide you with food and furs. You must marry the next
hunter who asks for you.” Sedna still wasn’t interested.

Soon a young hunter from a distant place came to her father’s camp . He was dressed in bark cloth, and spoke in a soft voice. He promised
to provide a good home and plenty of animals for food and clothing. Although he kept his face hidden under his hood, Sedna was very impressed
with him, so she agreed to marry him.

Sedna got into her husband’s kayak and travelled with him to her new home. When they arrived at his island, she saw that her home was
nothing but some sticks and bits of moss and feathers clinging to a large rock. Her husband took off his hood, and she realized that he was not a man,
but an evil raven. He never hunted, he only caught fish. Sedna was cold, lonely, hungry, and very unhappy. Every day she cried for her father to
come and save her.

Her father heard her cries and decided to rescue her. He paddled his kayak to the island where she was living. On their way home, Sedna
looked back and saw that the raven was following them. He was gaining on them quickly. As the raven came close, her father took his paddle and
struck the bird, who had to fall back. Then the raven flapped his powerful wings at the ocean and caused a huge storm to blow up.
When her father saw that their lives were in danger, he became afraid for his own life. He threw Sedna over the side of the kayak. Sedna
tried to save herself. She grabbed onto the kayak with her fingers, but her father took his paddle and beat at her fingers until they broke off. As they
sank into the ocean, her fingers turned into seals and fish. Again, Sedna grabbed the kayak with her hands, but her father took his paddle and beat her
hands until they also fell into the water. As they sank into the ocean, her hands turned into whale. Sedna also sank into the ocean.
