Preface

Educational resources are very important tools used by every teacher to improve the
teaching-learning process. Effective use of instructional materials can assure the teacher for
an active and productive learning and assessment.

Your task as a student teacher is vital in assessing your Cooperating Teacher (CT) to
search appropriate instructional materials. This lesson will build you in competency in
choosing instructional materials. That meet the needs of the individual learners.

This module shall assist you in searching and preparing the instructional materials
needed by your Cooperating Teacher. Learning portfolios on these learning experiences will
be prepared.

Pre-test

Before you start reading this module, take a look in answering these simple questions:
1. What issues should I consider when selecting instructional materials?
2. How can I use electronic resources to enhance student learning?
3. How can I help my students use textbooks more effectively?

Learning Experience 1:
Searching for Instructional Materials

Experiential Tasks:
1.1 Exposure: Examine instructional materials from the school’s resources or through technology or
digital resource.
1.2 Participation: Identify the purposes of IMs
1.3 Identification: Apply guidelines in selecting IMs.
1.4 Internalization: Applying guidelines in selecting IMs
1.5 Dissemination: Present appropriate IMs “Better this Time”.

Opener:

Every teacher needs supplies and resources in order to have a successful classroom. Writing
utensils, paper, and inspirational wall signs are all useful objects in a classroom, but they are not
instructional materials. Instructional materials are the tools used in educational lessons, which
includes active learning and assessment. Basically, any resource a teacher uses to help him teach his
students is an instructional material. There are many types of instructional materials, but let's look at
some of the most common ones.

1.1 Exposure
Request a copy of a learning plan from a Public School Teacher of his subject and look at the
learning objectives as your guide in searching for his needed Instructional Materials (Ms).

1.2. PARTICIPATION

As you assist your Cooperating Teacher in searching for needed IMs ,

consider the following purposes why teachers use IMs in teaching .

THE IMPORTANCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teachers at all levels utilize a variety of instructional materials such as textbooks,
presentations and handouts to enhance the quality of their lessons. The quality of those materials
directly impacts the quality of teaching. Knowing how to find the best instructional materials is a
valuable skill for a teacher to have.

The importance of Instructional Materials or Educational resources is to improve students’

knowledge, abilities, and skills, to monitor their assimilation of information, and to contribute to their
overall development and upbringing. It also clarifies important concepts to arouse and sustain

student’s interests, give all students in a class the opportunity to share experiences necessary for new
learning, help make learning more permanent.

1.2 IDENTIFICATION
While searching for your CTs IMs, make yourself guided by the following criteria in selecting
IMs.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

Criteria’s for evaluating instructional materials is very important to make teaching effective
and meaningful, here are some criteria’s:

Content

Aligns with curriculum and standards, and is current, valid and reliable, with real world
examples. Design to meet the interest of the individual learners from various skills levels. Enhances
conceptual understanding and engages higher order thinking skills. Free from bias.

Equity and Accessibility

Materials are durable, easily stored, transported and are universally accessible. Materials are
easily updated and are adaptable and customizable to match the resources of the school.

Appropriateness

Materials are appropriate for the subject matter, and also appropriate for the learner’s

capacity or levels of learning.

Presentation

Comprehensiveness of student and teacher resources; alignment of instructional

components; organization of instructional materials; readability of instructional materials; pacing of
content; ease of use and durability of materials. Learning Motivational strategies; teaching a few "Big
3

ideas;" explicit instruction; guidance and support; active participation of students; targeted
instructional strategies; targeted assessment strategies.

Cost

The materials used for teaching should not be expensive, as long as it eye captivating and
catches the attention of the students then it is an effective instructional material.

REEXAMINING YOUR ASSISTING TASK:

OPENER
Educators are generally well versed in managing content, and it is likely that instructional materials
will reach their production stage with the content issues clarified .However, there are production issues that
have to be considered for their educational impact on any material. These are illustration, the relationship of
illustration to words, and color, particularly in the printing process.

Reflection

How can the teacher’s use of IMs stimulate meaningful and lasting learning

Module Summary

A key feature of effective teaching is the selection of instructional materials that meet the needs of
students and fit the constraints of the teaching and learning environment. There are many pressures for
educators to match the audiovisual stimuli of television, computers, and electronic games with which students
are experienced. The speed of personal computers and the ease of authoring systems permit instructors to
design and customize computer-based audiovisual presentations and to develop computer-based assignments
for their students.
POST TEST

Answer these questions briefly.

1. What is the effect of the resources, methodologies, and technologies on student

learning?
2. How are students using them?
3. What are students learning from them
4. How and to what extent are students using optional resources?
