Course Title: Introduction to Public Health

A. Description:

North South University has created a significant differences and solid infrastructure for academic
&research facilities to ensure quality education in Bangladesh. Department of Public Health is
one of the most demanding departments in the North South University, which is already
recognized as the biggest Public Health Program in Bangladesh. It is committed to provide high
quality education and training in public health and in various emerging and reemerging health
issues. Department of Public Health offers the Master of Public Health (MPH) and Executive
Masters of Public Health (EMPH) which are completely parallel program to the best Universities
of the world. Also offering course for undergraduate students on Introduction to Public Health.

The Department of Public Health is dedicated to ensure quality education and capacity building
related to biomedical aspects of the vulnerable people. The vision is to create public Health
Leaders to facilitate best practices in Management, communication and discovery of highly
effective public health intervention and scientific tools for ensuring quality healthcare for
prevention, promotion and prolonging life in the developing world. It is worth mentioning here
that Department of Public Health is providing public health education, training and research with
international flavor and excellence relevant to the particular needs of the developing countries.

This course is designed to empower students to have knowledge and understanding of health,
public health issues and key health topics in priority communicable and non-communibale
diseases including prevention, treatement, care and support for positive impact. The course
conducted in participatory manner with wide range of flexible methods for helping students to
capture topics information and its application in life as well.

The Introduction to Public Health is a demanding topic at NSU, highly qualified and professionally
experienced Faculty are conducting the classes and students got opportunity to interacts, sharing
experiences and learning new knowledge and skills for founding the diversity of knowledge and
life skills in their career.

Biography of Dr. Nizam Uddin Ahmed

Dr. Nizam U Ahmed is a senior public health professional with a highly successful background in the
achievements of strategic planning, program design, implementation, partnership & capacity
building,resource mobilization and policy advocacy with Government and development partners through
creation and execution of successful strategies. He is high profile senior professional and is working over
25 years in national and international settings with International INGO, UN Agencies, National and
regional organizations/forums, Private sector organizations both in Bangladesh and international
assignments with varieties of cross-cultural settings in South Asia and Central Asia, USA, UK and Africa.

He has extensive experiences in Public Health programs design and implementation, decision making,
leadership and representation of organization with particular focus on in Health and HIV/AIDS. He has
experiences with diversified multi-lateral, bilateral & private donors including USAID, Global Fund, DFID,
Gates Foundation, Private donors, UN agencies and Government. He head large scale programs in Health
and HIV/AIDS sector including integrated HIV/AIDS prevention, maternal, newborn and child health,
Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual health and behavior change strategies. He believes in team work and
as well as managing, motivating and training for a successful and productive team and thrives in highly
demanding and challenging working environments for positive outcomes. He has proven ability to
navigate large and complex diplomatic challenges to the satisfaction of donors, implementers,
government and organizations. He is responsive, flexible and collaborates respectfully with colleagues,
team & counterparts with high integrity for results and impact.

He has strong experiences in ICT and utilized its tools in Health, HIV/AIDS programs & other development
& business sector programs, Research & Development and representation of organization with particular
focus on in ICT, Health, Population, Nutrition and HIV/AIDS. He has proven experiences in working
partnership with Government, NGOs, civil, Private sector and Academic institutions.

Dr Nizam Ahmed is currently working as CEO of MST Pharma & Health Care Ltd & ED, Shonokishoree
Foundation, Ethics Advanced Technology Limited (EATL) and Faculty of North South University. Prior to
this, He was working as Director HIV/AIDS and South Asia Program Advisor with Save the Children USA.
Dr. Nizam Ahmed also worked as Director of Health sector in Bangladesh with Save the Children USA,
various positions with CARE International and UNDP. He also worked in oversees as Program Director for
Counterpart International in Child Survival Program (CSP) in Uzbekistan, funded by USAID. He is member
of many HIV/AIDS networks that support programs globally and Asia. He is a Medical Doctor from
Bangladesh and completed his Masters in Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical
