2Below are 19 muscles that aid in movement of the shoulder complex.

Please list the

action which each muscle performs. If the muscle aids in more than one movement,

include all movements it which it acts. For example: abduction, flexion, external

rotation. You do not need to list the origin, insertion or neurovascular supply. This

assignment is worth 45 points, one point for turning the assignment in on time, and 44

points for the actions performed by the muscles below. Most muscles perform more

than one action, be thorough in your answers.

1. Supraspinatus: Abducts arm and stabilizes shoulder joint. 1/1

2.Infraspinatus: Lateral rotates arm and stabilizes shoulder joint. 1/1

3.Teres minor: Lateral rotates arm and stabilizes shoulder joint. 1/1

4. Subscapularis: Medial rotates arm and stabilizes shoulder joint 1/1

5.Trapezius: Lateral rotates, elevates, and retracts scapula. When scapula is fixed it extends and
laterally flexes neck. 2/4 (elevation of the scapula (upper fibers), retraction of scapula (middle
fibers), depression of the scapulae (lower fibers); upward rotation of glenoid cavity)

6.Teres major: Medially rotates and adducts arm. Stabilises shoulder joint. 2/3 (extension of arm)

7.Rhomboid minor: Rotates lower scapula to rest position, it also retracts the scapula. 1.5/3
(elevation & retraction of scapula, downward rotation of the glenoid cavity)

8.Rhomboid major: Retracts scapula and rotates it to rest position. 1.5/3 (elevation & retraction
of scapula, downward rotation of the glenoid cavity)

9.Biceps Brachii: Supinates forearm, flexes elbow, weakly flexes shoulder. 3/3
10. Triceps Brachii: Extension of the forearm at the elbow joint. 1/2 (extension of shoulder)

11. Deltoid: Abudcts arm, anterior fibres flex and medial rotate, posterior fibres extend and lat
rotate. 3/3

12. Coracobrachialis: Flexes and weakly adducts arm 2/2

13. Pectoralis major: Flexes, adducts and medially rotate arm. 3/4 (extends arm)

14. Pectoralis minor: Elevates ribs and protracts scapula. 1/2 (depresses shoulder)

15. Levator Scapulae: Raises medial border of scapula. 1/1

16. Latissimus Dorsi: Extends, adducts and medially rotates arm. 3/3

17. Serratus anterior: Lateral rotates protracts scapula. 2/3 (holds medial border of scapula
against thoracic wall)

18. Subclavius: Depresses clavicle and steadies it during shoulder movements. 1/1

19. Sternocleidomastoid: Flexes and laterally rotates cervical spine. Protracts head when acting
together. Extends neck when neck has already partially extended. 1/1
