What is the scope of study of Environmental Science? (Explain in not less than 100 words)

Environmental Science circles around the different areas of sciences, mainly biology,
geography, chemistry, physics, etc. that influences our environment’s natural processes. And
knowing this, it is safe to say that it has a multidisciplinary aspect to it, incorporating different fields
for us to further understand the behind-the-scenes of what is happening and what will happen if we
continue doing the things we’re already doing (pollution, poor waste management ). With all of the
disciplines that are under Environmental Science, it is evident that they all have a common emphasis
on Environmental Conservation. It is the ideal concept of every country, as this would help them
preserve the environment, lessening damages to their infrastructures when natural calamities strike
them but all of this will go to waste without the cooperation of the citizens, and this is where
Environmental Studies takes its role. It integrates the perception of the people, their thoughts
towards the environment itself, which in return, would be helpful for later researches focusing into
matters connected to the symbiotic relationship of humans and the environment.

Name a few NGOs that you are familiar with and discuss their advocacies. Do you agree with them?
Why or Why not?

When talking about known NGOs that are associated with the environment, GreenPeace
comes to mind. Their advocacy mainly focuses on making the Earth “green”, in a way that the
environment itself is protected from harm, while maintaining a peaceful approach to it. Most of their
activities include investigation to different officials, exposing the misuse of their positions, retrieving
or rescuing endangered animals, and tree planting programs.

Making those in position to be exposed of their mistreatment of the environment is a

phenomenal act of bravery by the organization itself, and it drastically makes an impact not only for
the people surrounding the area, but the whole environment itself. Their advocacy to make the planet
green and peaceful as their name suggests, also reflects their goal of making a better place for our
children to grow to.

Another NGO that comes to mind is the Fauna and Flora International, which has a goal of
protecting endangered species all over the world. They help in conserving them because they
maintain biodiversity in the environment, and if their number lessens, it will eventually be felt by the
whole world itself. Imagine a world with a lesser number of Fauna and Flora than it is now, Earth
may not be able to support our needs just like before, which is evident in today’s world crisis. We
may not feel it now, but as time progresses, things will get out of hand and all the things that we’re

doing now will eventually affect us in the near future, and being a part of an advocacy focusing
towards the betterment of the world, is a step closer to, not only their goal, but the goal of mankind
itself.

Define Ecology in your own words.

Ecology is the study of the symbiotic relationship between an organism and its environment.
It is where we are able to know the importance of the environment to the things that are being
supported by it. Ecology also allows us to furtherly understand the influence of this certain factor on
the whole system itself, which reflects the importance of animals and plants to biodiversity. Ecology
also makes us understand that all things in the world are connected in some ways, and if a single
organism is removed from the system, it will start a chain reaction to the whole system itself, just
like in the food chain, where the consumers, producers and the prey all have roles to play and if one
of them is missing, it will negatively affect the whole ecosystem that they are supposed to have.

Ecology also introduces the importance of balance in every system. The number of products
that would be consumed should be able to suffice the needs of the organisms in a given ecosystem.
Just like in a household, the number of food should be enough for the family members to consume,
and if it’s not enough for their consumption, it will likely affect their diets, promoting diseases to
affect their weakened immune systems.

As a student, how are you going to promote environmental public awareness?

As a student, I know that I will have a hard time promoting environmental awareness to the
public, especially to the elderlies. The only thing that comes in my mind for me to promote it is by
sharing a common experience that we should all have. As a child, we are protected by our parents
just like how a pirate protects their treasures. And this is evident even if we’re not always by their
side, we are still experiencing the care that we had as a child, and even in their last moments in the
world, all they think about is us.

Incorporating this to a person being aware of what the environment is suffering from, is like
a son caring for their mother. Sugarcoating the condition of our environment will not do the trick, so
we should take a look at it in a real-world perspective. So if your mother told you that she has a
disease, the tendency of you, as a son, is to find a way to help cure or lessen the suffering of your
mother. Just like the condition of the Earth, experts say that the Earth is constantly changing, and we
are not able to keep up with it, making us bystanders of our own environment’s destruction.

As a child of Mother Earth, we should be aware of what is happening and how we can play
our part to prolong its life, because it concerns all of us, not only the experts and the
activists, promoting their advocacies for the world to hear. We are all connected in this circle of life,
giving an opportunity for us to live. But how can we live our life to the fullest, if we’re not given the
chance to live in the first place.
