I am so greatful to my supervisors MR. Mamati Isaiah(wastewater supervisor),MR. Edwin

Chemwile (O &M) and MR. HarrisonWekesa (water treatment)and Miss Esther
(metering).

For the knowledge they imparted and the direction they gave me on areas related to
certificate course. I also thank all the regional officers for the cooperation they accorded
me during my attachment. I also express my sincere gratitude to the principal and other
members of staff at Kenya water institute for their academic and professional guidance.
 DEDICATION

I thank the Almighty God for the gift of life, strength and spirit of hard work
instilled in me. Throughout the attachment period; I realized inner motivation and
wisdom in undertaking my task. I also want to appreciate the wider role played
by my parents who saw the potential in me, encouraged and advised me on
how to effectively achieve success during my studies. My success is realized
through his financial support to cater for my up keep. My gratitude goes to Nzoia
water and Services Company and all staff that have imparted their vast

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION
Company background

Nzoia Water and Services Company (NZOWASCO) is one of the water service
providers under the docket of Lake Victoria North Water Service Board. The
company was registered under the companies Act (CAP 486)in 2004.The
mandate of the company is to provide cost effective and affordable quality of
water and sanitation to residents of the cluster towns of Kitale, Bungoma,
Webuye and Kimilili.

The company is owned by the county government of Transnzoia and Bungoma.

Shareholding is open to local authorities within nzoia cluster that may desire to
partner in the company worth cause. The company also inherits her work from
the previous water undertakers who were the ministry of water and irrigation and
National water services. Its aim is to provide effective and efficiency operation of
water unity depends upon staff making. The operation and decision making
based on knowledge experience and use industry based illustrated by:
1. Implementing standard operating procedure to ensure consistency when the
facility is normal

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The following is a simple organizational structure, power storming from the head
office then summarized at the regional level. However, all departmental bosses t
the head office but regionally, they report to the regional manager exhibits in all
regional.

OBJECTIVES

I. To get an opportunity to put knowledge gained at the college into practice.

II. To acquire skills and techniques directly applicable to my career.

III. To get exposure to the kind of tools used in the field.

IV. To be well versed with the limitation that come with career and know to
handle them.
SUMMARY OF DAILLY ACTIVITIES

WASTE WATER

In waste water I did the following task;

Unblocking of sewer line removing solid particles in the manhole by using iron
rods and removing the solid matters using bucket and ladder which help on
getting entry to deep manhole without stairs . You apply Roding to make
successful unblocking.

In pond site treatment of waste water is done whereby;

Screens are also used in waste water to prevent heavy debris /unwanted
materials from entering the ponds from the sewer line.

It enters to sedimentation pond which is deep and big than the other ponds and
it take long time to allow particles to settle in the pond.

In the pond it is exposed to sunlight, free oxygen circulation and take time to
ensure all bacteria is kill then sample is taken to lab to test if it is good to be
relies to river.

I also did slashing of grass and large plants around the pond.
WATER SUPPLY

This basically deals with operation and maintenance (o&m) and metering.

Operation and Maintenance

In maintenance and repair, I did the following task;

a. Making of socket and repair burst and leakages in pipes.

b. Disconnection of all types and sizes of water pipes.

c. Replacing old or defective meters.

d. Disconnecting /connecting water supply.

 Metering

In meter I did the following;

Meter reading of customer meters, service meters which is not working well .

Installation of new meters for new customers and also that meters that has fail to
work.

Disconnection of meters with huge debt and also reconnection of meters which
have settled the debt.

Raw water is collected from a river by a weir. At the intake we have screens;
coarse screens and fine screens which is used to remove large particles like
stones, tree branches not to pass through the system. There is also wet sub
massed pump which is used in pumping.

ALLUM DOSING ROOM

The aluminum sulphate solution is dosed into raw water to form a complex with
aluminum ions and can change both coagulation and optimum ph. This occurs in
coagulation basin.

FLOCCULATION
Glomeration of colloidal material is ampleted and they become incorporated in
the mass of precipitated flock. The flock settles to leave clarified liquid which is
collected by decantation basin.

SEDIMENTATION
Is the removal of relatively large particles of suspended matter from water. It is
achieved in sedimentation basin where particles are settled to remain with
water.

FILTRATION
Is the process of separating suspended and colloidal matter at the filtration
basin. It is made up of open graft basin which is filled with clean course sand
which is 4m deep and 2.4m width rectangular in shape. Water is filtered to leave
this flock which is backwashed with a certain period of time. The clean water is
collected for chlorination process.
CHLORINATION
Chlorine is added in water to kill bacteria and pathogens to remain with portable
water to human consumption which is pumped to various stations for
stabilization.

WATER QUALITY

The water treatment plant has process laboratory to ensure that the water is
safe to drink.

The water is tested daily for numerous parameters by the water plant operator
and the continuous on monitoring by process. eg residual chlorine, pH and
turbidity.
 ATTACHMENT EXPERIENCE

During my attachment I acquired and experienced the following;

1. I learnt how to repair bursts and leakages.
2. I learnt how to read and service meters.
3. I learnt how to interact, share experiences and exchange important
ideas with others in the company.
4. I got enough time to acquire skill management by attending to attachment
every week.

LIMITATIONS
1. Poor management leading to slow and sometimes closure of activities leaving
people suffering due to lack of water.

2. Lack of enough materials especially for repair and maintenance.

3. Disagreement between the staff and the supervisors making slow run of
activities.

4. Lack of enough staff and trained personnel to carry out different activities in
the field.
5. Lack of enough means of transport to transport workers in various working
sites.

6. Lack of enough facilities since workers lack protective clothes and enough
materials, equipment and tools to be used in the field.

7. Workers who work in water treatment firms and sewage are likely to be
attacked by diseases such as lung diseases due to use of chemical.

RECOMENDATION
The company should employ more workers in the field for maintenance to
reduce losses.

I would like to recommend the company to at least incentive the attaches to

motivate them.

The company should buy for the casuals and supervisors protective clothes to
protect them.

Maintenance should be carried out more often to reduce breakdown of

machines and tools.
The company should organize for meetings after a short time for proper
management and planning of activities for smooth running of the company.

CONCLUSION
Nzoia water and services company is a suitable organization where university and college
students studying degrees, diplomas and certificates in water engineering and water
resource management can achieve the objectives of their industrial attachment.

Working with Nzoia water and Services Company has given me a smooth transition from
classroom work to a working environment. During the three months of attachment period at
the company I had an opportunity to cover various water applications modeling in water
sector, participated in plumbing and pipe fitting and learned on all the processes of water
treatment.

Despite that there were some challenges, the skills, exposure and the experience I gained
at the company was the eye opener to what is expected in future and how to apply the
knowledge learnt in collage in real life situation as to be a prudent water engineer.
