A. B. C. D.

Looking Back at your Lesson

In previous lessons, we learned that a linear inequality in two variables is an inequality that can be written in
one of the following forms:
Ax + By < C Ax + By ≤ C
Ax + By > C Ax + By ≥ C

Where A, B, and C are real numbers and A and B are both not equal to zero.

Examples: 1. 4x – y > 1 4. 8x – 3y ≥ 14
2. x + 5y ≤ 9 5. 2y > x – 5
3. x + 7y < 2 6. y ≤ 6x + 11

The graph of a linear inequality in two variables is the set of all points in
the rectangular coordinate system whose ordered pairs satisfy the
inequality. When a line is graphed in the coordinate plane, it separates the
plane into two regions called half- planes. The line that separates the
plane is called the plane divider.

To graph an inequality in two variables, the following steps could be followed.

1. Replace the inequality symbol with an equal sign. The resulting equation becomes the plane divider.
Examples: a. y > x + 4 → y=x+4
b. y ≤ -x – 5 → y = -x – 5
2. Graph the resulting equation with a solid line if the original inequality contains ≤ or ≥ symbol. The solid line
indicates that all points on the line are part of the solution of the inequality. If the inequality contains < or >
symbol, use a dashed or broken line. The dashed or broken line indicates that the coordinates of all points

MATH 8 QUARTER 2 WEEK 2 2

on the line are not part of the solution set of the inequality. (Note that you may use any method in graphing
linear inequalities.)

3. Choose three points in one of the half-planes that are not on the line. Substitute the coordinates of these
points into the inequality. If the coordinates of these points satisfy the inequality or make the inequality true,
shade the half-plane or the region on one side of the plane divider where these points lie. Otherwise, the
other side of the plane divider will be shaded.

You can also use the point (0,0) if the line of the graph does not passes through the
origin. It would be easier for you to test if it would satisfy the given inequality or not.

Introduction

Just as we can form a system of linear equations, we also have the same with linear inequalities. By
definition, a system of linear inequalities consists of two or more linear inequalities that involve the same
variables.
A system of linear inequalities also has a solution set which are ordered pairs that satisfy all the
inequalities involved in a system.
To solve a system of inequalities in two variables by graphing, draw the graph of each inequality on the
same rectangular coordinate plane. Each time, shade the solution set of each inequality. The solution set
of the system is the region where the shadings overlap.

MATH 8 QUARTER 2 WEEK 2 3

2x – y > −3
Example: To solve the system { graphically, graph 2𝑥 – 𝑦 > −3 and 𝑥 + 4𝑦 ≤ 9 on the
x + 4y ≤ 9
same Cartesian coordinate plane. The region where the shadings overlap is the graph of the solution to the
system.

Certain situations in real life can be modeled by a system of linear inequalities in two variables.
Examples:
1. A theater actress is paid ₱250 per day to rehearse the play and ₱500 per day to perform in front of the
audience. In one season, the actress earned between ₱2000 and ₱5000. Write and graph a system of
linear inequalities to represent the situation.
Solution:
We know that she earned between 2000 and 5000. This means greater than 2000 but less than
5000. Then we let x be the number of days she rehearse the play and we let y be the number of
days she perform in front of the audience.
Therefore, our system of linear inequalities will be;
250x+500y > 2000
250x + 500y < 5000
In order to graph, we will first find the x and y intercepts of both equations because we must
determine the scale that will be used on the x and y axis.

250x + 500y > 2000 will give us x-int: (8,0)

and y-int: (0, 4) (eq.1)

250x +500y < 5000 will give us x-int: (20,0)

a and y-int: (0,10) (eq.2)

2. Luis receives a gift card worth ₱2,500 to an online retailer that sells digital music and games. Each song
cost ₱500 and each game cost ₱100. He wants to buy at least 15 items with this card. Set up a graph of
system of linear inequalities that represent the given scenario.
Solution:
We let x be the number of songs he can purchase and we let y be the number of games he can
purchase.
Therefore, our system of linear inequalities will be;
x + y ≥ 15 → since he wants to buy at least 15 items
500x + 100y ≤ 2500 → since he can only purchase a total of ₱2,500 worth on both items.

In order to graph, we will first find the x and y intercepts of both equations because we must
determine the scale that will be used on the x and y axis.

x + y ≥ 15 will give us x-int: (15,0)

Eq.2 and y-int: (0, 15) (eq.1)

3. You can work a maximum of 30 hours a week. You need to make ₱3,000 in order to cover your expenses.
Your office job pays ₱150 an hour and your babysitting job pays ₱100 an hour. Set up a graph of system of
linear inequalities that represent the given scenario.
Solution:
We let x be the number of hours for office work and we let y be the number of hours for
babysitting.
Therefore, our system of linear inequalities will be;
x + y ≤ 30 → since you can work a maximum of 30 hours

MATH 8 QUARTER 2 WEEK 2 5

150x + 100y ≥ 3000 → since you need to make at least ₱4,000 to cover your expenses

In order to graph, we will first find the x and y intercepts of both equations because we must
determine the scale that will be used on the x and y axis.

x + y ≤ 30 will give us x-int: (30,0)
