OBJECTIVES SCHEDULE
INTRODUCTION
• What is Asphalt Concrete?
– Mineral Aggregate
– Asphalt Binder (Bitumen)

• Critical Properties of Asphalt Concrete

– Air Voids Durability
– Compacted Density Stability
– Flow Flexibility
("7 MUST-HAVE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE," 2016)
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Air Voids Ratio and Permeability (Overseas Road Note 19,2002).
𝐺𝑚𝑚 − 𝐺𝑚𝑏 Marshall Method – 3% to 5%
𝐴𝑖𝑟 𝑉𝑜𝑖𝑑𝑠 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 = ( )x 100
𝐺𝑚𝑚 (Gerald Huber et al., n.d.)

• Poorly compacted asphalt mixtures have a permeability of 600% than well-

compacted asphalt mixture (Ridgeway, H. H., 1976)

Mix Design Methods (MS 2 – Asphalt Institute)

Marshall Method Hveem Method

ASTM D6926 ASTM D1560
AASHTO T245 ASTM D1561
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• RICE Test (AASHTO T 209 and ASTM D 2041)

Pmm : Percent by mass of total loose mixture (usually 100)

Pb : Asphalt content percent by the total mass of the mixture
Gb : Specific Gravity of Asphalt cement

• In Sri Lankan agencies,

𝐺𝑠𝑎 + 𝐺𝑠𝑏 Gsa = Apparent Specific Gravity of Aggregate Mix
𝐺𝑠𝑒 = Gsb = Bulk Specific Gravity of Aggregate Mix

SIGNIFICANCE
• Accuracy of local method should be determined
• Quality control restrictions due to the shortage of
relationship of two methods
• Requirements in projects with International
Standards
• Researches have not done for Granite aggregates and
for different aggregate properties and bitumen
properties
SCOPE & LIMITATIONS
Scope
• Determine Gmm for samples taken from different ongoing projects using,
1. RICE Test 2. Estimated Equation Method
• Evaluate accuracy of the estimated equation method
• Analyze the effect for Optimum Binder Content and Air Voids Ratio with
different aggregate properties and bitumen properties
Limitations
• Limited number of samples and tests due to time & Covid – 19 situation
• Will not check for equality of effective specific gravity and SSD specific
gravity
AIM & OBJECTIVES
AIM
Evaluate the impact of the method of determining Gmm on the air
void percentage of the asphalt paving mixtures.

OBJECTIVES
• Extract and analyze the field data samples for selected
properties of aggregates(Granite) and Bitumen
• Conduct RICE test to determine Gmm for relevant sample mixes
PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
Preliminary research and
Gap identification

Estimation equation method can be

used to determine Gmm
Hypothesis construct

•Collection on Asphalt mix in 10 different Road

Field data collection projects.
•Collect sample with different aggregate grades
and bitumen properties

Data analysis and

•Conduct RICE Test to determine Gmm
comparison
•Compare results and determine correlation
PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
Are results
aligning with
hypothesis?
NO

YES
Identify the reasons for deviations
•Check whether any plant or material
variations occurred during construction and
Present
report them
recommendations and
•Check if any variation occurred in RICE
conclusions
test method

Report writing
CURRENT PROGRESS
• Field Sample Collection
– Mix Designs are collected from 10 different ongoing projects
– Hot Bin Samples and Bitumen Samples
• RICE Test Method
– Standard method procedure
– How the variations can be occurred?
