1. Please explain how an AI can have a sense of smell.

According to the reference, the system of the AI copies how the brain functions
using the use of sense of smell. It has an algorithm that copies the olfactory system of a
human brain with electric pulses then analyzes the odors data. Built with a database of
different types of smell, the AI can classify them.

2. What industries or businesses can benefit from this technology? Please cite three
examples and provide explanations for each industry or business.

Fields of industry such as law enforcement, medical and emergency use such as
smoke detectors. For law enforcement, cases that deals identification of compound
such as drugs and bombs, this technology will help them without endangering the life of
police dogs while searching the ground. In the medical field, it can be used for people
who lose their sense of smell by a tragic accident or health conditions. Lastly for fire
protection, it can sense a distinct smell of threat from gas tanks and harmful gas, thus
alerting the people quicker.

3. What are the possible challenges of e-Noses? (e.g. Distance from subject and AI, you
may use this but provide another challenges)

As e-Noses copy how our olfactory systems function, it can be confused with
different odors that have the same smell. Even humans can be confused by these types
of odors. It can also provide inaccurate data with outside and instrumental factors such
as climate, humidity, age and temperature that affects its calibration.

4. How close are we now on having an AI that can smell as good as humans?

I think we're halfway there with 50% as there are still more challenges that an AI
encounters. However there can be other technology that is advanced with higher than

better than human does.

5. Do you think that AI will have better smell senses than humans after 25 years?

No, but closely yes, since technology nowadays is getting faster in terms of
advancements. A good investment will boost any type of technology to attain its full
features.
