JUAN NAKPIL (PHILIPPINES)

• Design Philosophy

- “Philippine Architecture”—a style that works with our local climate,

seismological conditions, and natural environment.

• Notable Structure (CAPITOL THEATER)

• Function

The Capitol Theater was an Art deco theater in Manila, Philippines. It was built during the
1930s along Escolta Street, part of the city's primary commercial district, together with the Lyric
Theater. It was designed with a double balcony by National Artist Juan Nakpil and was considered
a rare feat during that era. It was designed and built in the art-deco style of architecture, an
architectural style that was prevalent in the 1920s and 1930s. The Capitol had a total of eight
hundred seats, and one of Manila's air-conditioned theaters. One interesting feature of the Capitol
was its design.

• Notable Structure (UMNO building)

• Function

Rectangular four-story building was built in 1955 as the headquarters for UMNO Malay
National party of the United. It is located on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The building has wind
wing-walls to direct wind to special balconies zone that serve as pockets with "air-locks" (having
adjustable doors and panels to control the percentage of openable windows) for natural ventilation.
This building is probably the first high-rise office that uses wind as natural ventilation for creating
comfort conditions inside the building.
KOH SEOW CHUAN (SINGAPORE)

• Design Philosophy

- "Architecture is not about beautiful, sensational buildings with

immaculate looks,"
- “Architecture is not about building showy structures but creating ones
that people can live in and use.”
- “Good art, good architecture uplifts the human spirit. It will be a sad day
if the world has a lot of people [for whom] the human spirit is lost in the
pursuit of material things.”

• Notable Structure (SUNTEC CITY)

• Function

Suntec City, commissioned and built by a private consortium, began construction

in 1989 and was completed in phases between 1995 and 1997 at a cost of US$2.3
billion. Built in the heart of Marina Centre near City Hall MRT station, it has been
described as a “city within a city”. It comprises five office towers, a retail and
entertainment complex, and a convention and exhibition center. Suntec City was
designed by American architectural firm I. M. Pei and Partners, in collaboration
with local firm DP Architects and New York-based Tsao and McKown. The
structure of the building is supposed to resemble the human hand, with the 18-
storey Suntec City Tower representing the thumb, the four 45-storey office towers
the fingers, and the convention centre the wrist, while the Fountain of Wealth looks
like a gold ring in the centre of the palm.

VO TRONG NGHIA (VIETNAM)

• Design Philosophy

- "ARCHITECTURE should connect HUMAN and NATURE."

- "Sometimes we just ask the question: how many green areas, how many
big trees, can we give back to our earth when we design the building?"

• Notable Structure (HOUSE FOR TREES)

• Function

The figures of the home have been designed to resemble tree planting pots. While
made of concrete, we used a bamboo frame (set into the fresh concrete before it set, in
place of veneer). This gave the concrete surfaces a textured, horizontal striped pattern made
of bamboo. This home is located in the most densely-populated neighborhood of Ho Chi
Minh City. It is surrounded on all sides by small tenements with corrugated roofs and is
almost devoid of greenery. Since this home is the only green space in the area, it soon
became home to many birds. The owner often tells me he can't sleep because the birds are
so loud [laughter]. I know for sure, though, that it also stimulates his mind and body, and
is helping improve his condition over time. - vo trong nghia
