A. Based on the characters mentioned in the novel Noli Me Tangere:

1. Choose one character that you most resonate with and explain why.

From my own perspective, the character I resonate the most in the novel Noli Me
Tangere is Maria Clara. She was the weakest representation of women in the setting and the
primary female character in the novel. The reason I resonate with her is because I am a
Filipina. She was like the most Filipina that were sheltered and innocent.

2. Does your selected character represent a modern counterpart today? Explain who and why.

Maria Clara rarely represents a modern counterpart since modern woman had
change greatly. Most Filipina wear clothes that were popular in any country and wear
makeup. And they no longer act innocence since we had social media. They were not afraid
to be involve in the social issues unlike the women from the olden types. Elegant, innocent
and pure woman are rare in modern times. Most women now are strong, independent and
open to their emotions.

Based on the characters mentioned in the novel El Filibusterismo:

3. How is the lack of freedom portrayed in the novel?
In El Filibusterismo the Philippines was under the Spanish colonization. Their rule
was so strict to the point the Filipino people suffered. During that time, Filipino women didn’t
have freedom to study at school and were also not allowed to be engage in professional work
with men. They are also not permitted to run their own business. In the city of manila, the
nipa houses (Bahay-Kubo) are being demolished. During this time, the trades from different
countries are being prioritized. We Filipino are being discriminated by being called an Indios.
And lastly, only the family who belongs to the illustrados were allowed to be educated.
Filipinos during this time lacks independence. Luckily, we obtained the freedom and
independence through this work of Rizal that helps enlighten the Filipino people.

4. How is the situation in the novel different from today?

The situation in the Novel of El Filibusterismo shows how Filipinos lacks freedom.
But Today situations were different since we obtain the freedom that we should have. Filipino
women today can freely go study at any school they desired and were now allowed to start
their own businesses. Nipa houses are no longer being demolished. Local businesses are now
being prioritized ore than any trades in the country. We are now an independent country. We
are now able to accomplished all the things we couldn’t. We also have the technologies that
novel did not have. Social Media helps us to freely express ourselves and obtained the
information we needed. We could also do self-learning and everyone can be knowledgeable
in selected fields.
B. Reflection Paper

Directions: Read online the article: “Youth of Today: The New Rizals.” By Dan Rogayan
(https://danrogayan.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/youth-of-today-the-new-rizals/).

Guide Questions:

1. Based on your reading, what can you say about the article representation of value the role of
youth in the development and future of society?

The Filipino youth has always been tagged as the “hope of the nation.” This cliché is
not new to everyone’s acuity. Dr. Jose P. Rizal himself, in his firm conviction, emphasized that
every Filipino, regardless of their status in life can be a living Rizal. All I could say about the
article that I read is that I agree at the role of youth but at the same time I worry. Everything
might not go to the way that Rizal’s might expect where the youth became the reason in the
development and future of society. We can’t expect to put all the burden to the youth but
instead we should set an example that the future generation to follow our step and guide
them at the right path.

2. What is the main question that the article seeks to answer?

The questions that the article seeks to answer is “Are the youth the hope of our
country?”. Rizal always talk about how youth is the hope for the future of the country. But is
that really so? It is the question that the article talks about

3. What is your own reflection based on the article and your understanding?

“The national hero had never forgotten of conversing about the youth which he
resolutely deemed to be the succeeding builders of the country’s edifice. His love for the youth
is beyond compare as substantiated in almost all of his writings and actions. He explicated
through his masterpieces the imperative role of the youth in building the nation and in
molding the country’s future.”
My understanding from this article is that our national hero believes and put his hope
that the younger generation or the youth will mold the country’s future. All his writings
contain the trust he put on the youth. But I truly believe that we should set an example that
the youth will take as a role model so they won’t take the wrong path. We shouldn’t let the
youth take the burden on their own, lets guide them and ensure them that they could do it.

Compare your selected theme with the present-day situation.

The theme I selected are revolution/reform, education, and colonialism/religion and power.
During the time in Noli me tangere, the Filipino are being oppressed by friars. Power is in the hands
of Spanish. But now, things had change, we are now free from the Spanish rule. The government no
longer oppress the Filipino people unlike the Spanish colonization. Filipino are now stronger than
ever; they will do everything to fight for their rights and justice. We no longer need to stay quiet and
do whatever the others want us to act.
