MODULE 1 (WEEK 1)
Various pumps, types and principles
TOPIC LEARNING OUTCOMES
The students shall be able to:
● State that the function of a pump is to transfer fluid between two given points
● List the losses of head in a pumping system
● State that the viscosity of the fluid to be pumped must be within the range specified in the pump design
● State that permission obtained before any fluids moved which might affect the stability of the ship and cause
● pollution overboard
● Name the types of pump generally used on ships and the purposes for which they are normally used
● Explain the basic action of a displacement pump
● Explain the necessity for a relief valve to be fitted in the discharge of any displacement pump
● Explain the purpose of an air vessel fitted to the discharge
● Describe the characteristics of a reciprocating pump, referring to:
● Suction Discharge pressure
● Vapour or gas, in the fluid being pumped
● Explain the principle of rotary displacement pumps
● A gear pump
● A rotary vane pump
● A screw-displacement pump
● Describe the principles of operation of an axial-flow

Based on the video, describe how a pump works.
EXPLORE
Pump Theory:
The pump only adds to the energy of the system. The energy required to bring the fluid to the pump is an
external one, and in the most practical condition is provided by atmospheric pressure. Vacuum is created at
the suction side of the pump and bring the fluid inside.
Any fluid transfer must be placed in the log book and permission is necessary to maintain the stability of the ship.
Pumping condition:
The pressure head acts on the liquid surface at the suction inlet. The vertical distance of the pump center from the
surface of the liquid will affect the head available at the pump and must be added algebraically to the suction head.
If the pump is below the liquid level, suction head will be positive. But if it is above the liquid level, suction head will
be negative. The pipe will have some further resistance resulting in a loss of pressure head. If a further head loss due
to the velocity of the liquid will also occur but except for high velocities, is negligible.
Displacement:
• the volume of liquid being discharged by the pump in one revolution
• the pumping action that is achieved by the reduction or increase in volume of a space causing a liquid or gas to be
physically moved.
Types;
● reciprocating
● rotary
● screw
● vane
● gear
A relief valve must be fitted on the discharge side of the pump. It acts as a protective device that release excess
pressure back into the system.
An air vessel is fitted at the discharge side of the pump to collect the air and purge it into the atmosphere.
● are not self-priming and require some means of removing air from the suction pipe line and filling it with
liquid and open an air cock (bleeder) to remove the air by force that will affect priming
Type;
● centrifugal pumps
- impeller
- volute
- diffuser
● axial flow pump
An axial flow pump has a propeller-type of impeller running in a casing. The pressure in an axial flow pump is
developed by the flow of liquid over the blades of impeller. ... It allows the fluid to enter the impeller axially
and discharge the fluid nearly axially. The propeller of an axial flow pump is driven by a motor.
EVALUATE
EXTEND
1. Why is it that a relief valve must be contained within the pumping system during its operation? (15 points)
2. How do you understand the pumping condition? (20 points)
3. What are the importance of knowing its principles in your task? (15 points)
