EXPLAIN AND ELABORATE

Various pumps, types and principles

PUMPS -
● is a machine that used to release liquid from one point to a higher point
● a device which converts mechanical force and motion to hydraulic fluid power
● a device which adds to the energy of the liquid or gas causing an increase in its pressure and perhaps a
movement of a liquid. The basic system consists of a suction branch, a pump and a discharge branch.

Pump Theory:
The pump only adds to the energy of the system. The energy required to bring the fluid to the pump is an
external one, and in the most practical condition is provided by atmospheric pressure. Vacuum is created at
the suction side of the pump and bring the fluid inside.

Any fluid transfer must be placed in the log book and permission is necessary to maintain the stability of the ship.

Pumping condition:
The pressure head acts on the liquid surface at the suction inlet. The vertical distance of the pump center from the
surface of the liquid will affect the head available at the pump and must be added algebraically to the suction head.
If the pump is below the liquid level, suction head will be positive. But if it is above the liquid level, suction head will
be negative. The pipe will have some further resistance resulting in a loss of pressure head. If a further head loss due
to the velocity of the liquid will also occur but except for high velocities, is negligible.

Displacement:
• the volume of liquid being discharged by the pump in one revolution
• the pumping action that is achieved by the reduction or increase in volume of a space causing a liquid or gas to be
physically moved.

MAIN CLASSES OF PUMPS

Positive displacement pump
● a characteristic of a pump which has the inlet positively sealed from the outlet so that the liquid cannot
circulate in the component

Types;
● reciprocating
● rotary
● screw
● vane
● gear
A relief valve must be fitted on the discharge side of the pump. It acts as a protective device that release excess
pressure back into the system.
An air vessel is fitted at the discharge side of the pump to collect the air and purge it into the atmosphere.

Dynamic or non-positive displacement Pumps

● are not self-priming and require some means of removing air from the suction pipe line and filling it with
liquid and open an air cock (bleeder) to remove the air by force that will affect priming

Type;
● centrifugal pumps
- impeller
- volute
- diffuser
● axial flow pump

An axial flow pump has a propeller-type of impeller running in a casing. The pressure in an axial flow pump is
developed by the flow of liquid over the blades of impeller. ... It allows the fluid to enter the impeller axially
and discharge the fluid nearly axially. The propeller of an axial flow pump is driven by a motor.
