radio waves
Radio waves are an electromagnetic
radiation type that are most commonly
used in communication devices like
radios, mobile phones, and televisions.
These gadgets take in radio waves and
transform them into sound waves by
causing mechanical movements in the
speaker.

BASIC
CONCEPTS
01
According to NASA, radio waves have the longest
wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum,
with values between 0.04 inches (1 millimeter)
and more than 62 miles. They also have the
lowest frequencies, ranging from 3 kilohertz, or
3,000 cycles per second, to 300 gigahertz, or 300
billion hertz.

02
Radio waves were predicted to exist by Scottish physicist James
Clerk Maxwell, who created a comprehensive theory of
electromagnetism in the 1870s, according to the National Library of
Scotland. Hertz produced electromagnetic waves using
straightforward homemade devices like an induction coil and a
Leyden jar (an early type of capacitor made of a glass jar with foil
layers on the inside and the outside). Hertz was the first person to
send and receive radio waves under control.
BANDS OF RADIO WAVES
THE RADIO SPECTRUM IS TYPICALLY DIVIDED INTO NINE BANDS BY THE NATIONAL

TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION:

LOW TO MEDIUM FREQUENCIES HIGHER FREQUENCIES

ELF radio waves, the lowest of all radio frequencies,

Included in the HF, VHF, and UHF bands are FM radio,

have a vast range and are excellent for communicating public service radio, broadcast television sound,
with submarines as well as within mines and caverns cellphones, and GPS (global positioning system). For
since they can penetrate water and rock. encoding, or impressing, an audio or data signal into the
carrier wave, these bands commonly use "frequency
modulation" (FM). As environmental influences do not
influence frequency in the same way that they do

about 1.7 megahertz to 30 megahertz, according to the
National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters
(NASB). Numerous shortwave stations exist around the

globe, including Voice of America, British Broadcasting

Corporation, and Voice of Russia The highest radio frequencies are SHF and EHF, which
are also commonly referred to as being in the
microwave band. Short-range applications like Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, and wireless USB employ SHF, which is less
impacted by the air than EHF (universal serial bus).
