i) Nature and type of soil
Type of soil has a big impact on the soil compaction characteristics.
The coarse grained soils can be compacted to higher dry density than the fine grained soils. The
maximum dry density decreases if the quantity of fine soils is increased to an amount more than
that required to fill voids in coarse grained soils.
Cohesive soils such as heavy clays and silts provide higher resistance to compaction as they
attain lower maximum dry density.
SOIL MECHANICS BCE2205
Cohesionless soils such as sandy soils and coarse grained soils or gravelly soils are susceptible
for easy compaction.
ii) Water content of soil
This is the amount of water added to soil till it reaches its maximum dry density.
To achieve the desired density of soil by compaction, the moisture content of that soil has to be
controlled properly. If the water content is low, it leads to soil being which will resist
compaction. When the water content is increased, lubrication takes place between the soil
particles and the soil becomes more compactible.
At low water content, the soil is stiff and offers more resistance to compaction.
As the water content is increased, the soil particles become less frictionless, the soil mass
becomes more workable and the particles are easily compacted.
