CHAPTER 1
PROJECT
BACKGROUND

1
PROJECT BACKGROUND

Cleaning product demand increased during the COVID-19 pandemic due

to panic buying. Customers want to disinfect their homes in order to protect
themselves from infectious viruses. This chapter provides background
information and discussion on how proponents create and conceptualize their
new product and business. This chapter also discusses the significance of
making, its history, the raw materials used in production, and how to achieve
successful marketing not only for proponents but also for consumers, the
community, and the environment.

INTRODUCTION

Cleaning supplies are a necessary part of our daily lives at home, school,
and work. They keep infectious diseases from spreading and manage allergens
like dust and mold, keeping us healthy by safely and effectively eliminating soil,
bacteria, and other impurities. When the COVID-19 pandemic hits, it causes
panic buying has become a global phenomenon reflecting the loss of control
among consumers in the era of coronavirus lockdown. The cleaning goods
business has seen extraordinary demand for its products and services. Over the
past 2 years, sales have been found to increase the frequency of cleaning and
the use of cleaning products during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to lessen
the harmful impact of cleaning chemicals on human and environmental health,
cleaning with a soap or detergent-based household cleanser minimizes the
quantity of germs on surfaces and lowers the risk of infection. In most cases,
cleaning alone is sufficient to eliminate the majority of virus particles from
surfaces, disinfection to prevent COVID-19 transmission at home.

The increasing demand for cleaning goods in the Philippines is leading to

a shortage of supplies. In this time of the pandemic, surface cleaners are
essential in every home. Most of the surface cleaning products offered on the
market is chemicals that lead to chronic diseases. According to Chen (2020),
acute reactions may be a result of misuse and overuse of disinfectants. Chronic

2
health impacts may be due to long-term exposure to certain chemicals used in
disinfectants, whether separately or in combination.

Cleaning products are proven to kill infectious diseases. The proponents

came up with ECO CLEAN, an eco-friendly surface cleaner. For the sake of the
environment, it aims to reduce the harm to people from chemical cleaning
products.

1.1 Product History

In 1950, vacuum cleaners were the most popular household cleaning they
made up 84% of all products sold. Many people believe this is because they are
most commonly used on hardwood floors, which became popular in the 1940s.
During this time, there was also an increase in the production of dishwashers and
refrigerators (Jung, 2022).

In 1960, the most commonly used household cleaning products were

chlorine bleach and ammonia. These were followed by detergent, toilet cleaner,
surface cleaner, and fabric softener. The first aerosol air freshener was
introduced in 1962, and it consisted of a small bottle with a propellant canister on
one end (Jung, 2022).

Homeowners in 1970 were more likely to use a vacuum cleaner than a

good floor brush, wet mop, or bucket of water to clean their homes. They also
had to hand-wash dishes and dry them with a dish towel or paper towel. Since
then, a lot has changed. Product innovations such as powdered cleaners and
concentrated cleaners saved time and money in the 1970s (Jung, 2022).

In the 1980s, dishwashers were on the rise. They were more appealing
than hand-washing dishes due to their lower energy consumption rates.
Dishwasher detergent was also introduced in the 1980s. When dishwashers
became available in homes, people no longer had to rely on labor-intensive

3
methods such as commercial or residential dishwashing machines to clean their
dishes and pots (Jung, 2022).

The 1990s saw the introduction of several new household cleaning trends.
Procter & Gamble introduced the Swiffer brand in 1992, followed by Clorox's
Green Works cleaners in 1999. These products were popular because they
replaced harsh chemicals with plant-based cleaning solutions such as vinegar or
baking soda. In the 1990s, there was also an increase in the demand for "green"
or environmentally friendly products (Jung, 2022).

The Swiffer WetJet was the first significant new cleaning product in
decades in the early 2000s. This mop-like device cleaned floors without rinsing or
scrubbing by using disposable clothes and a spray bottle. It was a commercial
success, with more than one hundred million units sold by 2004 (Jung, 2022).

1.2 Facts on Primary Raw Materials

Peels of Citrus Fruits, according to Martinko (2018) citrus contains d-limonene,

a natural solvent that cuts through grease and dirt, and will leave your house
smelling fresher than ever.

Yeast is one of the most important fermenters for various fermented products
and foods. It also gives good quality such as texture, taste, nutritive values, odor,
and functional properties of fermented products. It is used in fermented food
either alone or with the association of other bacteria. (Jahangir, 2020)

Water is one of the raw materials for creating natural cleaning product. According
to Industrial Degreasers (2017) water based cleaners are less expensive that
solvent based solutions.

4
1.3 Manufacturing Company

The location site was chosen by the proponents because it was easily
accessible to the target retailers. The company is situated in Barangay Alasas,
San Fernando, Pampanga. The area is not on the list of flood-prone areas in
order to keep the manufacturing area safe from flood water. The manufacturing
company's location is easy to access in the roadmaps, has a low traffic
environment, and is less polluted in the area. The firm has fewer competitors in
the surrounding area and a peaceful and spacious environment. Furthermore,
the proponents chose this because the manufacturing company's price per
square meter is likely to be low because it is located in a rural area.

5
1.4 Company Name

Greenovation Company is derived from the words "green," which

represents the environment, and "novation," which represents the continuous

6
innovation of more eco-friendly products that can have a positive influence on
other businesses. The proponents named it "Greenovation" because the
company's objectives are to create a product that is good for the environment
and less harmful to people.

7
1.7 Company Mission

Aspires to be the leading producer of economic opportunity

To provide Filipinos with natural surface cleaning products in order to create a

clean and healthy environment for current and future generations.

To offer high-quality, environment - friendly products at a reasonable price.

The manufacturing firm has pledged to be environmentally conscious in order to

succeed.

To achieve the company's success, employees must be able to attract, develop

skills, and work in an environmentally friendly environment.

To maintain a long-term partnership, shareholders and investors must be

respected and trusted.

1.8 Company Logo

The proponents chose the color cream as the background color, as it symbolized
a calm and relaxing color. It is connected to a neutral color and feels classic,
reliable, and timeless because it is associated with the durability of ancient
buildings and monuments. This logo exemplifies real environmental stewardship.

8
The leaf represents environmental responsibility and the future of the planet. The
hands indicate environmental assistance. Finally, the circle of leaves signifies our
ecosystem's optimism in finding new solutions to protect the planet. We believe
that with the right eco-friendly and natural products, we can move forward with
confidence knowing that we are not causing any harm to the people and to the
environment

1.9 Product Name

The proponents have decided to call the product "ECO CLEAN." ECO
came from the word "eco-friendly" and CLEAN symbolized the cleanliness. The
main reason the proponents came up with this product name is that the cleaning
agent is eco-friendly and good for cleaning surfaces. The proponents believe that
the product name can be easily remembered and recognized by customers, who
will undoubtedly purchase it after seeing it as the organic cleaning agent.

9
1.10 Product Logo

The proponents designed this logo to help people recognize the product,
which is called "ECO CLEAN," which has its own meaning and symbolism. The
word "ECO CLEAN" is capitalized, indicating that it means "to lift up”. The color
green represents "Go ahead, go to introduce and compete with the market
competitors." The letter "O" has a plant in the middle. It represents the production
of organic products in order to lessen the harm of chemical product. It also has a
lemon in the middle which symbolized for the main raw material of the product,
the peel of the fruit. Finally, the tagline Surface Cleaner Spray has a green font,
implying concern for the environment.

3.7 Marketing Strategies

3.7.1 Product

Product

The proponents decided to produce a new variety of cleaning product that

is made with natural and organic ingredients like peeled citrus fruit, yeast, and
water. Citrus peels are natural and generally non-toxic, and they have a sweet
and relaxing effect due to their scent. ECO CLEAN surface cleaner is made up of
all natural ingredients, which means that the product is biodegradable, chemical
free, and non-toxic. ECO CLEAN is a safe, unique, affordable and quality
product. The product may be healthier for us, our customers, and the
environment.

Classification of product

Eco-friendly cleaning surface can be classified as business products because

they are intended for final consumption or as goods and services. Also, it is a
tangible product that is subsequently purchased to meet and satisfy the buyer’s
current wants and needs.

Rate of Consumption and Tangibility

The proponent classifies the eco-friendly cleaning surface as non-durable goods

because they can be consumed immediately when they are already opened and
used, since the weight of a product is only 500ml.

Consumer Shopping Habits

The proponents use convenience goods because it only requires a minimum

amount of effort on the part of the buyers to buy our product, for easy access and
convenience ECO CLEAN can be found or available in supermarkets/grocery.
64
Packaging

The spray bottle was chosen by the company as its main packaging because it is
frequently used to store liquids, such as cleaning supplies. The brand added the
name "ECO CLEAN" to the product to make it clear to customers that it contains
only natural and organic ingredients. Additionally, the packaging is compostable
and can decompose at home because it is made of biodegradable wheat straw.

65
The proponents will use box as their secondary packaging to their product to
avoid damage and to ensure the safety and integrity of the product. It also
included on the box the product logo. This packaging serves to protect the
product inside and must keep the product safe during delivery.

3.7.2 Price

Pricing Strategy

The proponents have chosen penetration as a pricing strategy where we will set
a price lower than the expectation of the customer and its direct competitors
because as a new entrant in the market we are after the market shares.

As for the pricing approach, the company will use a cost-plus pricing under the
cost-based approach because, choosing this pricing approach, we can set a
price that can easily be determined in the company that we will achieve the
income we have been looking forward to gaining. As the price of the product it
will be sell for 48 pesos to a 500ml of Eco Clean.
