Work
CONSTRUCTION OF EARTH ROADS
1. First of all the sub-grade is prepared and the road surface is brought to the required camber
and gradient.
2. Then the surface is rolled properly and well witted with water
3. Then a layer of about 12 cm thickness of graded soil is spread evenly.
4. This layer of soil is rolled at optimum moisture content first with a suitable roller and then
finished with a light roller.
5. A second layer will be laid in the same way as the first layer and rolled properly as above.
6. The finished surface is then checked and camber is corrected if desired.
7. Then finally finished surface is watered for about 5 days for curing and no traffic is allowed
in these days. After that, the road is opened to traffic.
Assumptions
The existing soil / road bed after removing the top soil is suitable for road construction
and it will be scarified and compacted in place
The top soil will be used for the landscaping work
The soil from the well excavating site is considered as a suitable material for road bed
materials (can be used as sub base and wearing course for the earth road).
For the sub base soil from the well excavating site with 2 layers of each 12 thickness will
be used
The current available excavated material at the well excavation site is enough for the two
12 cm layers of compacted earth. Additional production is not needed.
Daily labor is freely available and the labor cost is not included
Drainage work is not included. If it must be, a concrete pipe culvert will be purchased
and used.
Road type 1:
Width = 12 meter
Total length = 80 meter
Area = 12 + (3m) * 80 = 960 m2
For site clearance including 1.5 meters of extra soil clearance from the road edge on both
sides = 1200 m2

1.4. Disposal of surplus soil and waste materials resulting from site clearance
Assumptions:
Of the cleared topsoil, half will be used for green areas and the other half will be disposed
of within a 3 km distance.
Estimated quantity to be disposed = (24807 m2 * 0.15 meter /2) = 1860 m3 in bank state

o Disease and drought in recent years have negatively affected certain tree species. Forestry
encourages designs utilizing a diversity of tree species hardy to the Edmonton area to reduce
the spread of pests and disease and to mitigate the potential visual impact of losing one
species within a localized area.
o Grouping trees within mulched beds is encouraged where practical to improve growth and
survival. Reduced tree spacing in group plantings may be considered by Forestry. Individual
tree planting remains acceptable.
