III.DESCRIPTION

One of the people that can be compared to our national heroes are those who
contributed by sharing their talents and skills and awakened our fellowmen to the realities
of society. Carlos V. Francisco, better known as Botong, was responsible for
revolutionizing the fine arts landscape of the Philippines. His major works include Portrait
of Purita, The Invasion of Limahong, Serenade, Muslim Betrothal, Blood Compact, First
Mass at Limasawa, The Martyrdom of Rizal, Bayanihan, Magpupukot, Fiesta, Bayanihan
sa Bukid, and Sandugo. He is the man behind the famous artwork, “Magpupukot” (Pulling
in the Net), which depicts an everyday scenario of fishermen pulling the net to catch fish,
which is a daily routine for them. This portrait was created as a tribute to his works and
heart for the endeavors he made to navigate reality through art. As students, we believe that
a simple line, brush stroke, and color can bring hope and awareness into a person’s life,
which is how “Botong” inspired us, the newly aspiring artists. We can use our creative
thinking and skills to portray the lives of people who have made significant contributions to
our society, just as he did. As long as we remain motivated and inspired, the brush will
stroke its line, and color will add brightness and vibrancy to our lives.
