Education Amidst Covid-19

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

A. Background of the Study

The new normal of education is accompanied by different forms of education, initially met with

different opposition due to risks. But with the efforts of the education sector in the Philippines, it is done

systematically for the goal of continuing education despite the pandemic. Different safety measures are

being implemented by the IATF or the Inter-Agency Task Force to prevent and mitigate the spread of

COVID-19 while the teaching and learning process continues in the country to protect the teachers,

parents, and students’ health and welfare. Some of the safety protocols include: proper sanitation of the

schools where modular learning is implemented by providing alcohol stands in every classroom for the

parents’ use; sanitizing footpath mats at every room’s doorsteps; wearing face masks and face shields is a

must for the teachers and parents; and social distancing is strictly executed. For online learning and other

modalities where parents and their children stay at home as well as the teachers, they are prescribed to do

proper hand washing and regular sanitizing of their homes. Secure yourself and others from disease by

washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub regularly and not touching your face. The COVID-19

infection spreads essentially through droplets of saliva or release from the nose when a tainted person

coughs or wheezes, so it’s critical to merely practice respiratory behavior (for example, by coughing into

a flexed elbow). The pandemic has not only affected higher education on a global scale, but it has also

brought numerous challenges to the higher education community. Due to the pandemic, there are more

than 1.5 billion students in 190 countries who are not physically able to attend school (UNICEF, 2020).

As such, educational institutions have made a dramatic transition from traditional face-to-face learning to

remote learning in a very short time period (Kandri, 2020). Educational institutions are still wary of

lifting closures in order to minimize the spread of the disease. This, in turn, has affected their core efforts

5

directed toward teaching, learning, and conducting research. As a solution, educational institutions have

decided to keep the option of remote or online learning intact. However, both teachers and students, as

well as educational institutions, face numerous other difficulties associated with access to technology,

quality of online learning, financing, and available infrastructure.

B. Statement of the Problem

1. What are the effects of COVID-19 distance learning transitions on students at St. Clare College?

2. What is the future of distance learning and is the model effective during a pandemic?

3. Why did the education transition happen?

C. Objective

This study aims to spread the information and impacts of COVID-19 distance learning among

students and to provide a solution to the stated problem. This study will show how the problems and

difficulties caused by COVID-19 would be coped with by the students and teachers. spread awareness

and information that students can use for their future purposes as a way to make their lives better and for

them to know why this transition happens. To make them secure by spreading information that might help

them in their daily lives, especially these days because of how pandemics evolve like the COVID-19

variants. To gather information that might solve a certain problem by gathering solutions from different

perspectives and studies. The impact of the new distance learning situation on the students is affecting

their mental and physical health. By doing this, we are providing information that might help or solve

other students that are having a hard time coping with the new normal.

D. Significance of the Study

6
7

In this research, we will discuss the students' and teacher's feelings and experiences during the

transition that happened after the pandemic started. Particularly in their experience academically and their

thoughts about it. This study will focus on students' and teachers' thoughts, and we will give some

possible key points to solve and put an effective method through the study. In regards to the future of

academics, this study will help each and every one of us. Because of how we who experienced the

pandemic had to make things work by trying new things like distance learning, the students' future will be

much more determined.

E. Scope and Limitations

This study aims to spread awareness and information about the pandemic's effects on every one of

us, especially in academics. That led us to make the transition from face-to-face learning to distance

learning. Ever since the pandemic started, a lot of research has been done from time to time, especially at

St. Clare College of Caloocan in terms of experiencing the COVID-19. A lot of schools have made a

transition because of this, and one of them is St. Clare. Because of this, our way of learning has come to

change. The pandemic, the impact of living our daily lives, the tragedy of losing loved ones because of

COVID-19, But adapting is still necessary because of how our nature as humans is to adapt and evolve.

The methods we will use for this research are part of what we call "adapting data collection and

utilization to the COVID-19."

conducted only inside St. Clare College of Caloocan. This concludes every student's experience and

perspective every year of distance learning
