CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The discovery of Electricity had a significant impact in the world. Electricity

comes with many sources such as nuclear energy, thermal energy, and solar

energy and many more by using energy conversion. Energy conversion is the

transformation of converting one type of energy into another form 1. Any change

in energy in systems can be performed only by removing or adding energy from

it, since energy is a variable that is capable of conservation. At this present time

our main source of electricity is coal, Coal is a classified as a non-renewable

energy because it takes of million years to form. Solar energy, is a great choice

because solar energy is truly renewable energy source. It can be harness in all

areas of the world. Presently, the solar energy is being used in some home for

lights and other light appliances but some people is still want to run their

appliances on electric energy than using solar energy.

Solar power uses solar panels to harness solar energy and to convert the

energy from the sunlight into usable energy. However, the sun never fails to

shine in the Philippines. This is why solar panels in the Philippines are a great

investment. The tropical climate allows for a lot of sunlight, which automatically

means that there will never be a want as a source of solar power.

With the increasing problems about the utilization of the different sources of

energy, like thermal energy, nuclear energy. Solar energy powered by the energy

comes to sun is an alternative to provide and to unravel the difficulty of having a

electricity. Solar powered lights as a replacement for the traditional one would be

far better option, given the advantages that the solar powered lights give. The

source of energy is non-polluting, low maintenance and renewable source unlike

the normal sources of energy like coal and oil. This paper presents a numerical

investigation on how to minimize the house’s energy consumption, and the

results show that a house’s electricity consumption can be supported by the

installation of solar photovaltaic panels on its rooftop.

That is why we researcher ofted to do research about the sustainability of the

solar panels for consumers who are utilizing energy from sun light.

Theoretical Framework

This study on the Sustainability of Solar Panel in delivering electric current for

consumers consumption in Brgy. Gulod, Novaliches Quezon City is anchored to

Marx’s Theory of Metabolic Rift2, Solar energy technology allows for the

harnessing of the renewable and practically infinite energy of the sun to provide

for human energy needs. Solar technology has the potential to heal the rift in the

human-nature metabolic energy and carbon balances. By using the energy

provided by the sun, humans would be realigned with the energy flow of the earth

as a metabolic system and could live within the solar energy budget.

Conceptual Framework

The theory of metabolic rift proposes that there is a long-standing rift in the

human-nature metabolism. As argued here, this rift occurred with human

exploitation of nonrenewable resources, a prerequisite to urbanization,

industrialization, and mechanized agriculture, creating a rift in the solar energy

balance metabolism and the carbon metabolic balance. Humans are the only

species on earth to exploit nonrenewable energy sources that surpass the

constraints of our solar income budget. However, since the concept of the rift is

based on the concept of metabolism, healing the human-nature metabolic

relationship is another way of addressing the rift. Solar energy technology offers

one way to eliminate the metabolic rift and restoring a balance in human-nature

metabolic relations.

The PSU is searching for ways to lessen the cost and effect on the environment

related with their activities. One feasible alternative is solar energy use to

produce electricity on the four (4) campuses. Solar power, however, is a complex

issue for an enormous project in particular. Taking the time to assess alternatives

before starting a project of this scale, it is possible to save money and effort in

the future. This research is intended to verify the probability and connected

benefits from solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system installation equals to the

generation capacity on its campuses. Solar PV data were determined to compute

the complete estimated quantity of electricity each solar power system would

generate yearly.

Cost information was used to evaluate each system’s cost from the Solar

Philippines and the cost of electricity per kWh from each and every solar energy

system and from different distribution utility for each campus. Another, University

space and energy usage data particularly from the Office of the University

Engineer were used to verify the size and capacity of the required solar power

systems and the accessibility of campus space. Additionally, talks and

consultations with the Campus Executive Directors, Coordinator for Physical

Facilities, and the Campus Accountant were used to assess both financial and

non-financial advantages from the university's use of solar.

According to Forousdastan and Dees, harnessing the sun’s energy is within our

grasp, and for developing countries, this is a golden opportunity. Solar power is

an increasing market for more developed countries, which can benefit from less

electric expense over time. It is also good for the environment because it

replaces the traditional, and in effect harmful, methods of energy production.

There are other renewable energy sources besides solar, but it is especially

practical for sunny areas which have less wind and water resources. Because of

the extensive research being conducted in this field, solar panels are developing

into more efficient models than ever. The higher competition level between

manufacturers allows for cheaper prices as well. Reasons for choosing solar

versatility perfect for the needs of a developing country.

Most developing countries are geographically located for optimal absorption of

the sun’s rays. Many can be found along the equator or upon vast expansions of

desert. In these locations, there is a great amount of sunlight year-round, but a

shortage of water and biomass, and possibly wind in some areas. Solar

Foreign Literature

Advances in Solar Energy towards Efficient and Sustainability Energy

Nuria Novas, Rosa Maria Garcia, Jose Manuel Camacho & Alfredo Alcayde

Department of Engineering, University of Almeria

Energy sustainability is extensively discussed in the scientific and political

community. Until now, there have been two different approaches on the matter.

One considers an increase in electricity consumption essential for the economic

development and social progress of the countries, whereas others are more

concerned about keeping carbon consumption within certain limits. The definition

of sustainability is not unanimous among the scientific community. In the

literature, it is associated with different concepts depending on the point of view

studied. In planning energy-sustainable development, sustainability indicators

must be considered to compare their implementation. To do this, the emergy

concept is identified and used in numerous works. Emergy involves indicators

such as the Environmental Load Ratio (ELR), Emergy Yield Ratio (EYR) and

Emergy Sustainability Index (ESI), defined as the ratio between EYR and ELR,

the Renewable Percentage (RP), Environmental Load Ratio, Emergy Investment

Ratio (EIR) and others. The scientific community is not unanimous in establishing

single energy sustainability indicators. Another indicator is the Energy Payback

Time (EPBT), which allows assessing the time necessary to produce the amount

of energy that compensates the investment. Another one is the greenhouse gas

(GHG) emission rate. This indicator has an environmental character, and it

allows the evaluation of the emission rate divided by the amount of electricity

generated in the life cycle of a process [1]. In the literature, there is a wide variety

of applications oriented towards sustainable energy solutions. The water supply

for human consumption is just an example. Energy, Sustainability 2021, 13,

6295. https://doi.org/10.3390/su13116295

https://www.mdpi.com/journal/sustainability Sustainability 2021, 13, 6295 2 of 31

environmental, technical, social, and economic feasibility studies are required to

reduce the freshwater shortage.

The areas most affected by freshwater scarcity are the areas with the highest

solar radiation. Solar energy can be appropriate, environmentally, and

economically sustainable in the long term [2]. Another example of commercial-

agricultural applicability is solar greenhouses [3]. The method developed in this

work applies bibliometric techniques based on the use of databases, allowing the

distribution of contributions in different communities. Each community focuses on

diverse topics within the main theme of the study. This distribution is carried out

without establishing a bias by citations or years of publication; the main criteria is

the effective relationship between the authors and the keywords they present.

Thus, advances in the field of sustainability and energy are studied, eliminating

papers and authors not directly related to this field, and focusing on the most

relevant papers.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter represents the research design, respondent’s data gathering

procedures, research instruments and statistical methods to be in the study.

Research Design

The researcher employ the descriptive method in the gathering of the data

to complete this research study. Descriptive research is defined as a research

method that describes the characteristics of the population or phenomenon stud-

ied. This methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject than

the “why” of the research subject. The descriptive research method primarily fo-

cuses on describing the nature of a demographic segment, without focusing on

“why” a particular phenomenon occurs. In other words, it “describes” the subject

of the research, without covering “why” it happens. This study will record, inspect

and interpret the data to collect through the questionnaires used and will simply

distribute them.

problems posted in the SOP. The corresponding analysis and interpretation of
data are incorporated in this portion of the study.
In order to come up the set of data conducted a test run on the survey
questionnaires by using the students at St. John Technological College of the
Philippines as proponents to determine the metrics used which is the frequency
distribution which is efficient to quantify and to qualify responses there are two
parts of the questionnaires
