Before joining the Viet Minh in 1945, Le Quoc Loc was attending the Indochina College
of Fine Arts (now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts), majoring in lacquer. After the
August Revolution, he worked at the Department of Propaganda and later became a
member of Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 1957. Later in 1959, he came the
Headmaster of the University of Industrial Fine Arts. Loc is an artist that specialized in
lacquer, using traditional techniques. In his pieces, Loc often try to portray the life of
soldiers and the people during the Revolution and the War. His art has unique layout,
creating different layers of perspective while still utilizing Vietnamese materials as the
main source.

In Giữ lấy hoà bình, there is a contrast of lighting that utilized shade and warm colors
in order to strength and resilience of the working people. The shapes in this painting
also help to serve this purpose, with strong geometric shape with a bit of angularity.

 Your critical analysis/response to the artwork:

o I like the fact that the artist is able to incorporate traditional elements while
also able to tell a story about the life of the people during the war

o That the colors were used very differently

o It shows a family with a mother, a father, and a child. The father seems like
a fisherman

o I think it is a successful message that even during the war, people can still
work happily and aim for peace
