COOLING CALCULATION FOR 40 / 50MVA ,66 / 11.5kV TRANSFORMER

CALCULATION FOR COOLING AND HEAT DISSIPATION

GUARANTEED TEMPERATURE LIMITS

Top Oil Rise = 45°C
Winding Rise = 50°C

LOSS DETAILS
Submit calculation
Guaranteed No-load losses = 25 kW (Max)
Guaranteed Load losses at Nor tap at 50MVA(ONAF) = 125 kW (Max)
Calculated Load losses at Min tap at 50MVA(ONAF) = 135 kW (Max)
Total losses at Min tap at 50MVA(ONAF) (NLL+LL@min tap) = 25 + 135 kW
= 160 kW
Load losses at Min tap at 40MVA(ONAN) = 135x (40/50) ^2
= 86.4 kW
Total losses at Min tap at 40MVA(ONAN) (NLL+LL@min tap) = 25 + 86.4 kW
= 111.4 kW

RADIATOR FIN CALCULATION

Total losses to be dissipated by ONAN Cooling = 111.4 kW

Details of tank and loss dissipation by tank

Tank length (Inside dimension) = 4125mm
Tank width (Inside dimension) = 1660mm
Tank height (Inside dimension) = 2850mm

As per internal design manual watts/m2 dissipated by MS tank is 750W. We consider full
dissipation by tank cover as cover surface is fully exposed to embrace air contact where as
67% dissipation by side walls is considered in view of obstructed air flow caused by mouting
of radiators/control boxes(marshalling box,FCC),etc.

Heat dissipation by tank wall = 500 W

Heat dissipation by tank cover = 750 W
Surface area of tank wall = (2 x (4125+1660))x2850x10^-6
= 32.97 sq.mtr
Surface area of tank cover = 4125 x 1660 x10^-6
= 6.85 sq.mtr
Total loss dissipation by tank = 32.97 x 500+6.85 x 750
= 21623 W
= 21.623 kW

Losses to be dissipated by radiators = 111.4 - 0kW (ignoring tank

(ONAN loss to dissipate - tank dissipation watts) = 111.4 kW dessipation)

Calculated HV Gradient (as per our design rules) = 13 deg

Calculated LV Gradient (as per our design rules) = 15 deg
Average Oil Temperature Rise = AWR - Gr -2
Average Winding Rise (AWR) = 50 deg
Maximum gradient = 15 deg
Average Oil Temperature Rise = 50 - 15 -2
= 33 deg

ALL INFORMATION IN THIS DOCUMENT IS CONFIDENTIAL AND SHOULD NOT BE USED WITHOUT PRIOR CONSENT OF INDO TECH TRANSFORMERS LIMITED
Top Oil Rise = Average Oil Rise + T2

T2 (Top header oil rise - Bottom header oil rise) = 14 x Losses at min. tap ^0.5
2 Thermal head

T2 (ONAN) = 14 x 111.4(Losses @ min tap) ^0.5

610(Thermal head)

= 6

Top Oil Rise = 33 + 6 = 39 deg

(Value at which top oil to be restricted) = 38 deg

Radiato size selected = 2400 center 520 width

Watts dissipated per fin @ 38 deg = 686 watts (refer table below)
Dissipation efficiency factor = CF1 factor x CF2 x CF3
Horizontal correction factor (CF1) = 0.950
(Horizontal distance between radiator center to center)
Vertical correction factor (CF2) = 1.009
(Based on thermal head(Center line difference between core center line and radiator center line)
Fin factor (CF3) = 0.95
(Based on number of fins)

Combined efficiency = 0.95 x 1.009 x 0.95 (refer table below)

= 0.9106

Watts dissipated per fin after efficiency = 686 x 0.9106

= 624.69 watts
= 0.62 kW

Total no. of fins required = Loss to be dissipated by radiators

Actual heat dissipation per fin
= 111.4 / 0.62
= 178.33 fins
No. of radiators selected = 7 nos.
No. of fins / radiator = 178.33 / 7
= 25.48 fins

Required radiators are = 2400C/C x 520 width x 26 fins x 7

Provided radiators are = 1900/ 2400C/C x 520 width x 3/27 fins x 7

Hence the radiators provided for ONAN cooling are adequate.

FAN CALCULATION (ONAF AT 50MVA)

Total losses to be dissipated (ONAF) = 160 kW (25 kW + 135 kW)

Air flow required for dissipating 160 kW = 0.97 x Losses to dissipate m3/sec
Temp. diff. at top and bottom

T2 (Top header oil rise - Bottom header oil rise) = 14 x Losses at min. tap ^0.5
2 Thermal head

T2 (ONAF) = 14 x 160(Losses @ min tap) ^0.5

610(Thermal head)

= 7.2

Temp. difference at top and bottom = 2 x 7.2(T2)

= 14.4

Air flow required for dissipating 160 kW = 0.97 x160 / 14.4 m3/sec
= 10.78

ALL INFORMATION IN THIS DOCUMENT IS CONFIDENTIAL AND SHOULD NOT BE USED WITHOUT PRIOR CONSENT OF INDO TECH TRANSFORMERS LIMITED
Fan selected (900 rpm 24 inches) = 10450 m3/hr air flow
= 10450/3600 m3/sec air flow
= 2.9 m3/sec air flow
No. of fans requried = 10.78 / 2.9 no's
= 3.72 fans

Actual working fans provided = 6 fans

Total provided fans are = 6 fans + 2 standby

Hence number of fans provided to dissipate are adequate.

HOTSPOT CALCULATION

Hotspot = Top-oil rise + Gradient * 1.3 + Average Ambient temperature

where,

Yearly ambient temperature = 32°C

Temperature rise of winding = 50°C

Temperature rise of oil = 45°C

Maximum gradient (ONAN / ONAF) = 15 / 17°C

Top-oil Rise = 38°C (Refer cooling calculations for details)

Hotspot = Top-oil rise + Gradient * 1.3 +Yearly Average Ambient temperature

= 38 + 17 * 1.3 + 32
= 92.1°C
