Instructions for the organization of the CBSE Reading Challenge- Round I

Context: Reading is fundamental to functioning in today’s world. It opens door to all kinds of new
worlds around us helping us/one to understand ourselves better as well as our and others cultures.
Reading Literacy, thus, becomes a prerequisite for successful participation in adult life.

In view of the significance of reading, it becomes important for schools to encourage students to read
correctly. The current CBSE Reading Challenge is an exercise with a view to generate and sustain
interest in reading in school students.
Reading and its Assessment: Reading is the process that negotiates the meaning between the text
and its reader. Effective readers are able to understand, evaluate and reflect on a written text much
better. Reading skills (assessment in the present Reading Challenge) focuses on two major elements:
Reading comprehension with accuracy and Reading speed.
• Effective readers with better reading comprehension would understand, evaluate and reflect on
the written text and shall be able to correctly answer question based on text passages included
in reading tasks. Thus, a student who gets higher score in the reading challenge tasks would be
considered as better reader in comparison to others.
• Reading with faster pace/at a higher speed is the second desired element. It is becoming more
important in the present age of information overflow. Thus, students who are able to read,
comprehend and process written information faster would be able to make a better sense of
the world.
Procedure (Round One- to be organized between 28.11.2022 – 30.11.2022)
• Reading Challenge paper provided by the CBSE at 2 levels for (Hindi & English) must be given
individually to students as per the options opted (language) by them.
• The papers have 30 assessment items and a maximum time limit of 45 minutes.
• The teacher (invigilating) should be prepared to monitor time (take note of starting time; make
sure instructions are given to students before-hand; make sure all students start at the same
time; make note of students who submit the paper before time).
• There is a likelihood that some students would finish the task earlier than the prescribed time-
limit. The invigilator needs to take a note of such students and mark them as suggested below:
Mark as
Students who finish the task between 30-35 (3 star)
minutes
Students who finish the task between 35-40 (2 star)
minutes
Students who finish the task between 40-45 (1 star)
minutes

Such marking would facilitate selection of students for Reading Challenge Round-II.
• After students have finished the Reading task, score them as per scoring key provided.
• Reading Challenge assessment criteria includes both speed & accuracy-
o Students who are able to answer maximum questions accurately should be considered
first for selection.
o In case there are more students getting the same marks, the students who are able to
get the score in less time should get preference for selection i.e. those with three stars
(***) get priority over the those getting two stars (**) or one (*) star.
• Select 10 students (2 each from classes 6,7,8,9 and 10) for Hindi Reading Challenge and 10 for
English Reading Challenge and register them for Reading Challenge Stage-II. The date of
Registration on 01.12.2022 to 16.12.2022.
