METHODOLOGY

Research Method

This study will follow the descriptive-correlational and comparative research

designs through the use of the survey technique. The descriptive part will gather

information on some teacher-related antecedents such as sex, age, number of years of

teaching, school currently teaching, highest educational attainment and teaching

assignation either as Junior and or Senior High School teacher. The descriptive part

will likewise gather information on the level of emotional quotient of teachers along

the domains of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social skills,

as well as the extent of the experiences of challenges in these four domains during the

pandemic. Meanwhile, the correlational design will establish relation between the

level of emotional quotient and experiences of challenges among teachers during the

pandemic in the four domains. The comparative design will compare the teachers’

level of emotional quotient when grouped by teacher-related antecedents. Based on

the salient findings of this study, it shall endeavor to craft a seminar plan to

reinvigorate the teachers’ emotional equilibrium and resolve the challenges

encountered in the workplace.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted in the Four High Schools of the District of

Tagaytay City. These high schools include: (1) Tagaytay City National High School;

(2) Tagaytay City Science National High School; (3) Francisco P. Tolentino

Integrated High School; and (4) Tagaytay City Integrated School.

The 2021 Annual Accomplishment Report of Tagaytay City District

articulates that the global outbreak of the highly contagious new strain of coronavirus

known as COVID-19 continues to pose unprecedented challenges. At this point, the

biggest impact of COVID-19 arises from the need to practice stringent social or

physical distancing to prevent or mitigate its spread. For the Department of Education

(DepEd), this meant the cancellation of classes and other school activities as the need

arises, and that for SY 2020-2021, schools must find ways for learning to continue

amidst the threat and uncertainties brought about by COVID-19, while ensuring the

health, safety, and well-being of all learners, teachers, and personnel of the

Department.

Such contagion has caused not only psychological strain among students and

teachers but emotional imbalance as well. Despite seemingly insurmountable

challenges, the District has registered the following enrollment data from 2020-2021

and 2021-2022:

During the COVID 19 pandemic, the various schools have followed

stringently the health protocols issued by the Interagency Task Force (IATF). Said

schools strictly adhered to guidelines in order to prevent the spread of the virus. The

City Health Government Unit is also determined in implementing compliance to it. It

has helped monitor all schools in the district to assess their needs. As a result, the city
30

government has repaired the comfort rooms and water lining of the school not

compliant to the protocol.

Meanwhile, in the district and schools’ activities, the local government unit of

Tagaytay always support school-related activities, including the barangay local

government unit through the direct instruction of the city mayor. They took initiatives

to disseminate and inform the people in the community of the different programs,

projects and activities of the schools like the implementation of Blended Learning.

Traditional face to face classes were converted to Distance Learning Modality.

Teachers and other school personnel communicated to each other virtually. School-

related activities were done online. These includes meetings, conferences, trainings,

classes, monitoring and the like.

Establishing a stable internet connection is one of the major components for

the aforesaid activities. To attend to the needs of the times, all schools were installed

with internet connections named as: LINkod Caviteno, where learners, teachers and

other school personnel can access internet connection free of charge. The City

Government of Tagaytay ensures that learning continuity in the district through the

assistance given to the school in module reproduction so that a one to one ratio of

students as regard the module is achieved.

The aforesaid schools are all located in Tagaytay, officially known as the

City of Tagaytay. It is a 2nd class component city in the province of Cavite,

Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 85, 330 people. It is

one of the country's most popular destinations for domestic tourism because of its

scenery and cooler climate provided by its altitude. Tagaytay overlooks Taal Lake in

Batangas and provides views of Taal Volcano Island in the middle of the lake through

various vantage points situated in the city. Tagaytay is relatively close to the capital

city of Manila via the Aguinaldo Highway providing an easy escape for the locals

from the heat of the huge metropolis.

Research Participants

This is a population study of all teachers in the four high schools of Tagaytay

City District. The proponent teaches in one of these schools. Table 1 shows the

number of teachers per school and as a whole:

The target total number of high school teachers in this study is 385. About

30.1% will come from Tagaytay City National High School, 47.5% will come from

Tagaytay City Science National High School, 14.5% will come from Francisco P.

Tolentino Integrated High School and 7.9% will come from Tagaytay City Integrated

School.

Research Instruments
33

In gathering the needed data, the data gathering tool below will be used:

1. Emotional Quotient Scale (EQS). This tool was adopted from Rao (2020).

The instrument consists of 35 items that described the four dimensions of

emotional quotient namely: self – awareness (8 items), self – management (9

items), social awareness (8 items) and social skills (10 items). For physical

and content validity, the tool will be validated by the members of the

examining panel during the proposal defense. The tool had been tested to 50

respondents for reliability purposes. The internal consistency per domain and

as a whole was computed as follow: Self-Awareness (.819), Self-Management

(.826), Social Awareness (.878) and Social Management (.832). The overall

computed Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was at .869. Hence, per domain and as

a whole, the tool could be considered as reliable; and

2. Extent of Challenges Encountered along the Four Domains of EQS. This

is a researcher-made survey which follows the four domains of EQS. It will be

subjected to the panel of examiners’ critiquing for face and content validity.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering the needed data, the following procedures and techniques will be

strictly followed:

After the proposal defense, the proponent will integrate the comments and

suggestions of the members of the examining panel.

The transmittal letters will also be prepared to solicit approval from school

heads for the conduct of the study and the data gathering instrument will also be

finalized.
34

As soon as the approval to conduct the study from school heads are sought, the

tool will be provided to the teacher-respondents. They will be given time to respond

to the survey. After some time, the survey shall be retrieved by the proponent herself.

When all the survey forms are retrieved, encoding and coding of data will follow.

Treatment of Data

To treat the gathered data, the following tools and techniques will be used:

1. To describe some teacher-related antecedents such as sex, age, number of

years teaching, school currently teaching, highest educational attainment and

teaching assignation either as Junior and or Senior High School teacher,

computation of frequencies and percentages will be used;

2. To determine the level of emotional quotient of high school teachers in

Tagaytay City District in terms of self-awareness, self-management, social

awareness and social skills, computation of mean scores, weighted mean

scores and standard deviations will be used. To determine appropriate

qualitative descriptions, Table 2 below will be used:

Table 2. Likert Scale and Qualitative Description for Level of EQ

Codes Mean Scale Qualitative Descriptions

1 1.00-1.49 Very Low
2 1.50-2.49 Low
3 2.50-3.49 Moderate
4 3.50-4.00 High

3. To compare the level of emotional quotient of the high school teachers across

the four domains, either the parametric (repeated measure test) and or the non-

parametric (Friedman test) tools will be used depending on the normality in

the distribution of the research participants’ perceptions of the dependent

variables;
35

4. To determine the extent of experiences of challenges among the high school

teachers along the four domains of emotional quotient, computation of mean

scores, weighted mean scores and standard deviations will be used. To

determine appropriate qualitative descriptions, Table 3 below will be used:

Table 3. Likert Scale and Qualitative Description for Extent of Challenges

Encountered along the four Domains of EQ

Codes Mean Scale Qualitative Descriptions

1 1.00-1.49 Experienced at a very little
extent
2 1.50-2.49 Little extent
3 2.50-3.49 Moderate extent
4 3.50-4.00 Great extent

5. To compare the extent of challenges encountered by the high school teachers

along the four domains of emotional quotient, either the parametric (repeated

measure test) and or the non-parametric (Friedman test) tools will be used

depending on the normality in the distribution of the research participants’

perceptions of the dependent variables;

6. To establish correlation between the emotional quotient and extent of

experiences of challenges among the high school teachers along the four

domains of EQ, either the parametric (Pearson r test) and or the non-

parametric (Spearman rho test) tools will be used depending on the normality

in the distribution of the research participants’ perceptions of the dependent

variables;

7. To compare the level of emotional quotient of the high school teachers when

grouped by certain teacher-related antecedents, either the parametric (using t-

test for two categorical variables and or ANOVA for three or more categorical

variables) and or the non-parametric (using Mann-Whitney U for two

categorical variables or Kruskal-Wallis test for 3 or more categorical

36

variables) tools will be used depending on the normality in the distribution of

the respondents’ perceptions of the dependent variables; and

8. To craft the proposed seminar plan to reinvigorate the high school teachers’

emotional quotient and resolve the challenges experienced by them, it will rely

heavily on the salient findings of this study.
