2.2 EQUIPMENT

A. The mechanical marker shall be an approved mobile atomizing spray type

marking machine for the application of the required paint, either hand-
propelled or machine-propelled, capable of applying paint in single, double
and dashed lines.

B. All the lines and shapes done by the markers equipment shall conform to the
(MUTCD)

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

A. Allow paving to cure for 30 days before starting pavement marking paint.

3.2 APPLICATION

A. Weather Limitations: Perform painting only when the existing surface is dry
and clean, when the pavement and air temperatures are above 10oC and
when weather is not too windy, dusty, or foggy for the protection of the satis-
factory painting.

B. Sample Painting: If required by the Ministry Representative, paint a sample

pavement strip of 45 m length at an approved location. The sample shall
demonstrate that the materials, equipment, and application methods will pro-
vide specified results. Proceed with work only after the methods established in
the sample have been approved.

C. Layouts and Alignment: On sections of pavements where no previously applied

figures, markings, or stripes are available to serve as a guide, spot the layouts
and lines of proposed stripes in advance of the painting thermoplastic strip-
ping. Space control points to ensure the accurate location of all markings.

D. Equipment for Painting:

1. Equipment will be subject to approval of the Ministry Representative,

and shall include apparatus for cleaning the existing surface, a me-

chanical marking machine, and auxiliary hand-painting equipment.
2. Mechanical marker shall be an atomizing spray-type marking machine
for applying traffic paint and shall produce a film of uniform thickness
at the required coverage rate. Markings shall be of uniform cross-
section, shall have clear-cut edges without runs or spatters, and shall
be within the specified limits for straightness. When needed, furnish a
reflective media dispenser for attachment to the mechanical marker.
3. Provide adjustments on the sprayers of a single machine to paint the
width required, or furnish additional equipment.
4. Hydrocarbon thermoplastic traffic strips shall be applied with an ap-
proved extrusion machine capable of applying the thermoplastic to
the required width in accordance with the manufacturer's written rec-
ommendations.

E. Preparation of Surface:

1. Immediately before applying paint, clean the pavement by sweeping

and blowing as necessary to produce a dry surface free from substanc-
es such as dirt, grease, oil, acid, and other substances which will re-
duce the bond between markers and the pavement. Scrub areas which
cannot be satisfactorily cleaned by brooming and blowing, as required,
to be treated with a 10 percent solution by weight of trisodium phos-
phate in water or other approved solution. After scrubbing, rinse the
solution off and dry the surface before painting or application of the
thermoplastic.
2. Spot the layouts and lines of proposed stripes on pavement in advance
of the paint application. Space control points to ensure the accurate
location of all markings.

F. Application of Paint or Thermoplastic:

1. Apply markings in the locations shown and in conformance with the

dimensions, spacing, and colors shown, or as required. Do not apply
paint until the layouts, indicated alignment, and the condition of the
existing surface are approved.
2. Apply single stripes wholly on one side of longitudinal pavement joints.
Center double or multiple stripes over such joints.
3. Mix the paint in accordance with the manufacturer's written instruc-
tions and apply it to the surface of the pavement with the marking
machine at its original consistency without the addition of thinner. Use
pneumatic spray guns for hand application in areas where mobile
paint applicator cannot be used. Do not use brushes to apply paint.
Thermoplastic shall be applied in accordance with manufacturer's rec-
ommendations.
4. When reflectorized markings are applied, distribute the reflective me-
dia to the surface of the pigmented binder immediately, and imbed at
the required rate.
5. Make sure that the paint does not bleed excessively, curl, or discolor
when it is applied to bituminous surfaces.
6. When painting straight stripes, obliterate deviations in the edges ex-
ceeding 13 mm in 15 m and correct the markings. The widths of the

markings shall be as indicated, within a tolerance of plus or minus five
percent. Perform painting or application of thermoplastic as approved.
7. For the solid lines, the rate of paint shall be at least 40 liter for every
kilometer if the surface is smooth, and at least 50 liter for every kilo-
meter if the surface was rough.
8. For the dashed lines, the rate of paint shall be at least 14.5 liter for
every kilometer.

G. Application of Glass Beads:

1. In addition to the ballotini included in the mix, an additional quantity

of glass beads shall be sprayed on the wet spray plastic line at the time
of application with a rate of 0.6~0.7 kg for every 1 liter of paint. The
upper surfaces of the lines shall be level, uniform and free from
streaks.

3.3 PROTECTION AND CLEANING

A. All marking paint shall be protected from damage until the paint is dry. Paint
shall be protected from all traffic, vehicle and pedestrian. All paints shall be
maintained to the Ministry Representative's satisfaction.
