We, the researchers of Group 1, aim to do a Calorimeter, since there are a lot of
studies, and investigatory projects that are already done for this project, we are opting
to improvise a calorimeter that aims and follows our research and study. In line with
this project we are aiming to do this in order to measure the final heat and specific
capacity. A metal will be heated in water to transfer the heat, in a closed insulated
container with the thermometer filled with water, the metal will be transferred to
measure the specific heat absorbed and released. This project is supervised and will be
curated by Group 1, at Pilar College of Zamboanga City, Physics Laboratory. This
project is estimated to be done, 1-2 weeks prior to the exhibit day.
III. Project Background
2
The concept of Calorimetry is a process wherein we measure the heat absorbed
and released as Q in = Q out. According to the 1 st Law of Thermodynamics, it will never
allow to have an energy loss but can only change into another form or be transferred to
another object. The instrument used in calorimetry is a Calorimeter. The purpose of
such instrument is to obtain enthalpy information. It is made up of a thermometer with
a mixing tool and a container that is a good heat conductor. Our primary objective for
this project is to solve for the Final heat and specific heat with the formula q=mc(T f -Ti),
where q= energy, m= mass, c is specific heat capacity, T f is final temperature, and Ti is
the initial temperature. Specific heat capacity with the formula Q= mC∆T, where Q is
the heat energy, m is mass, c is the specific heat capacity and ∆T is the change in
temperature. And finally, the percentage error is also yet to be known after the
experiment with the device. It is vital to know these variables no only to know whether
the calorimeter is working and effective but also to be aware if an object is exothermic
(releases heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat). In the real world scenario, it is important
to know the change of heat in a chemical reaction. This prototype is used to measure the
thermal heat changes of the reactions occurring in a certain interval of time. A
graphical layout if the instrument is shown below.
V. Project Objectives
V. Project Methodology
This research proposal is subdivided into various tasks. One of these is the
research, since there are already existing prototypes, we have to investigate their
structures and components for us to be able to apply it on our own research. After the
research, we have to gather the materials needed for the project.

B. Project Deliverables
Final heat- After all, the final heat must be learned in order to know the
thermal energy transferred from a certain object.
Specific heat capacity- it is the specific heat that is needed to raise the
temperature.
Percentage Error- to know how close the experimental value is from the
theoretical value.
2. Rusting of the metal / tin can - After testing, the project must be
kept dry, and stored in a cool dry
place
