read a peer-reviewed article, I should get an idea of the information that will be discussed by
looking for key ideas and a brief explanation about the subject to be discussed. Since journal
articles have a specific audience and the author addresses topics while assuming the audience
knows about the topic, I, as a reader, should look for other articles that might talk about the same
subject and look for ideas and keywords that are used frequently to understand the article’s topic
before I read it. There is another important thing I need to prepare to read a peer-reviewed article
and that is creating a supportive learning environment by finding a place where I can concentrate
What should you do while reading a peer-reviewed article? While reading a peer-
reviewed article, I should take note of my thoughts as I go along. For example, I can actively
engage with content by jotting down any questions that I might have about the topic and
highlighting key ideas that are related to the overall topic being discussed. I should also look for
key points that help me understand the context and the outcomes; this way, I will be able to focus
on what it is that I need from the article and not just the details the author needs to use to
describe the overall topic but that might be unnecessary for my information. I should also

highlight and underline unknown information while avoiding any heavy annotating and
markings.
What should you do when you finish reading a peer-reviewed article? After I finish
reading a peer-reviewed article, it is best practice to reflect on what I read and go back to it at a
later date. This way, I can look for new connections that I may or may not have done during the
first time reading. I can also try to write a summary from memory to see if I found all the
important ideas and their relationships with one another. It is also a good idea to explain and
share what I read and learned with a friend or even say it out loud to myself and in my own
words. This will allow my mind to reflect introspectively and see whether I understood the topic
