PURPOSE The aim of this project is for learners to research


how the media reports on sport personalities and
to determine the fairness or unfairness of such
coverage.

INSTRUCTIONS TO LEARNERS:

A cover page must be provided and should have the title of the project.

You must research independently, read and write up the project


independently.
A research project has the following process that needs to be followed.

 A table of contents where the main headings are written in capital letters and
the subheadings in small caps should be used. Additionally, the page
numbers should cohere (relate) with the content of your project. The page
numbers should be on the right hand side and each aspect must be
numbered on the left hand side.
 Write or type your content using subheadings for each section.
 You have to answer the questions as set out in this assignment in full
sentences. No one word answers will be accepted.

 Beautify the whole project, but don’t obscure visibility. Borders could also be
used.
 Provide for adequate spacing between paragraphs.
 Use examples to support and illustrate your points.
 Sources must be used to complete this project.
 In- text referencing should be used and acknowledged in your bibliography.
 Your product should be legibly written.
 Don’t write a sentence if it does not make sense to you. Short and meaningful
sentences are preferable.
 Direct copying of material from any source is discouraged. Paraphrase the
material and acknowledge the source (s)
 Ensure proper grammar and proofread (check) before submission.
 Where warranted (needed), attach the necessary excerpts (extracts).
 A minimum of FOUR sources could be used depending on the extent of the
argument to be made.
 Include a bibliography where you list the titles of books you consulted,
articles, websites you visited and the other sources of information ( see
Annexure A)

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1.1 Write a paragraph in which you give a brief explanation on how
sport personalities are portrayed by the media and how the
portrayal influence people. Your paragraph should have an
introductory sentence suitable to the topic of this research project

Use the following bulletin to answer:

 The influence that the media has on the people (1x2=2)

answer the following questions:

1.1.3.1 For each of the three sports personalities that you have chosen, (3x2=6)
provide a detailed description of the situations they faced that were
negatively exploited by the media.
1.1.4 For each of the three sports personalities that you have chosen, (3x1=3)
name human rights that you felt the media infringed.

infringed upon in each case.
1.1.5 Discuss the possible consequences each of them had to face in (3x2=6)
their personal lives due to the negative media coverage and
provide a reason for each of your answers.

3.1 Discuss the media’s responsibilities in a democracy. (1X6=6)


3.2 Having discussed how sports personalities are portrayed by the (5x2=10)
media, provide FIVE recommendations to the media on how
these challenges can be addressed.
3.3 The Constitution in South Africa guarantees us the freedom of (2X2=4)
expression. There are, however, some limitations to freedom
of expression. Name two limitations that can prevent the media
from committing human rights violations.
