HOW TO WRITE THE CONCLUSION OF A PROBLEM - SOLUTION ESSAY A


ACTIVITY 1a: Before watching the video (CPS Week 9 - Conclusions for a problem
solution essay), write the 3 components of a body paragraph and explain them.

* A body paragraph must include

a. Topic sentence: one of the problems mentioned in the thesis statement.


b. Supporting idea: The main background
c. Solution: A purposed solution for the topic sentence
d. Resulting sentence: A summary of the paragraph, mainly focused on the
problem and its solution.

ACTIVITY 1b: Organize the body paragraph below. In the ( ) place the number that corresponds
to the correct order of a body paragraph. Fill in the gaps using appropriate connectors.

(4) That way, people will be easy identifiable, and they will be more responsible with the
content they upload or download.

(1) To begin with, another problem about internet usage concerns anonymity.

(2) For example, Rogers (2016) stated that “As internet users can easily hide their identity and
even impersonate others. Many crimes such as identity theft and child abuse result from the
ease with which criminals can operate anonymously online”. Many dangerous sites are easily
accessible to criminals because they can register in a site and claim to be a different person.

(3) As a possible solution, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology could
propose a system of online identification, like a passport, this system will allow all internet users
to be verified and traced before, while and after using any internet services.

ACTIVITY 2b: Highlight each part of the conclusion with different colors in the sample below.
Sample:
Considering everything, rising numbers of illicit means of transport and women being harassed
are the consequences of overpopulated cities that do not have appropriate systems to transport.
This worrying tendency can be stopped by meeting up with informal transporters to legitimize
their work and teaching women how to defend themselves. This would involve the support of the
Ministry of Transport and the City Major, as well as, the local Police Department. By doing so,
the difficulties caused by not having enough transportation systems will be reduced providing
life quality to main cities inhabitants.

ACTIVITY 3a: Read the following thesis statement and restatement. Identify their components
with different colors.

Original thesis: Three of the most common problems that people who attend school and work
at the same time encounter are not having enough time to study and socialize.

Topic: people who attend school and work at the same time
Negative connotation: not having enough time to

Restatement: Lack of studying time and impossibility to share with others are the two main
problems that people who go to school and have a job at the same time experience.

Negative connotation: This is not necessary if the problems are stated using a “negative”
word.

ACTIVITY 3b: Now, identify the components in the following thesis and then restate it.
Original thesis: This essay will discuss the main problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle;
such problems are obesity and premature death.

Topic: Sedentary lifestyle

Restatement: Overweight and premature death are the two main problems that having a
sedentary lifestyle cause.

ACTIVITY 4: Organize the CONCLUDING paragraph below. In the parenthesis () place the number
that corresponds to the correct order of it. Write the corresponding name of the component in
each line.

(4) (General result) If these measurements are taken, people will be more conscious about their
health, consequently, they might start exercising more.
(3) (Actors/who) This course of actions is the responsibility of the Health Ministry together with
local schools and universities.
(1) (Thesis restatement) Obesity and poor fitness are a significant problem in modern life, leading
to lower life expectancy, and high blood pressure.
(2) (Solutions) These bad consequences can be tackled by developing health campaigns in parks
and public spaces, as well as, allowing time in different educational spaces to workout.
