Nelson Mandela
in full Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, byname Madiba, (born July 18, 1918,
Mvezo, South Africa—died December 5, 2013, Johannesburg), Black
nationalist and the first Black president of South Africa (1994–99). His
negotiations in the early 1990s with South African Pres. F.W. de Klerk
helped end the country’s apartheid system of racial segregation and
ushered in a peaceful transition to majority rule. Mandela and de Klerk
were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993 for their efforts.

1. DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION CLUE

• The new term maybe formally defined, or


sufficient explanation may be given within the
sentence or in the following sentence
• Clues to definition include “that is,” commas,
dashes, and parentheses.

- “Skeleton-like appearance” is the definition

• Sometimes when a reader finds a new word,
an example might be found nearby that
helps to explain its meaning. Words like

out example clues.

3. Synonym Restatement Clue

• The reader may discover the


meaning of an unknown word
because it repeats an idea expressed
in familiar words nearby.

• Clues contrast the meaning of unfamiliar


word with the meaning of familiar term.
• Words like “although,” “however,”and
“but”may signal contrast clues.
