Professional Self Analysis Summary

While attending Winston Salem State University I gained large amounts of knowledge
about how the sports industry operates. The classes that were included in my field of study
taught me many different skills such as how athletic facilities operate and how important
planning is when running one. I also had the opportunity to take multiple tours of different
facilities, work for my University Rec, and talk to many professional individuals in the sports
industry. The Sports Management program incorporated major Zoom meeting calls, where we
had the opportunity to network and speak with different schools about their sports management
programs including master programs.

I have been exposed around the industry as a young man through my mom who played an
intricate role in my interest in the field. She was my first introduction to the sports management
field as she was a Facility Manager for a Parks and Recreation department. By watching her
manage the activities that were offered in her recreation facility I was then launched into
assisting and facilitating some sports at the center. I began with learning how to maintain
equipment and complete inventory to assist her staff with conducting the tiny tots basketball
programs. During my time being introduced to the field I became more and more intrigued with
doing something I love and providing a service to my community. I had the freedom to
incorporate skills that were later enhanced by attending Winston Salem State University and
majoring in sports management.

For completion of my degree in the field, I decided to do my internship at William

Roscoe Anderson Community center. This was a facility I toured during completion of SPM
3308 Facility Management and design class taught by Dr.Stowe. The course helped me to
examine the total day to day operations, design, principles, practices and plan a facility schedule.
Throughout my internship I was entrusted to participate mainly with the basketball program.
Under the supervision of Mr. Brian McCrokle, tasks that I had to complete during my time at the
facility were creating flyers for programs/events, engagement with the community youth and
providing customer service. I also was chosen to represent Anderson recreation center at WSSU
volunteer fair as a recruiter for volunteers to coach youth sports. I had over 25 volunteers sign up
to assist with programs at the facility. WSSU has helped me to learn and apply my skills in my
daily tasks. After being consistent with my time management and hard work Mr.McCorkle then
told me that a local middle school had an open head basketball coaching position. He based his
decision off the previous year volunteer coaching position. I coached the 8 under, 15 under youth
recreation basketball team. My 8 under basketball team had a winning record and won the
championship. Throughout the season you could see that my players on both teams were
developing skills and understanding basketball better. I applied and met with the athletic director
at Carter G Woodson and he felt that I would be a great fit for the program, needless to say I was
offered the position. Currently I am the boys middle school head basketball coach at Carter G
Woodson and assistant coach to the varsity boys basketball team. This is a great start for me to
be gaining early coaching experience. I am hoping to one day open up my own basketball
training facility called Aim Athletics, this will also be where I start my own AAU team and also
do basketball skill training.

In conclusion the skills I learned in my classes and during my time working in my

internship has helped me get better prepared for working in the sports industry. I developed
leadership skills, time management skills, how to operate a facility, and also how to dress
professionally when working in the sports industry. The things learned will forever stick with me
and help me to be one of the top competitors when it comes to looking for a career in the sports
industry.
