5 Satellite Transmission
Section Describes
5.1 Introduction
5.1.1 Application
Satellite transmission has a wide coverage area, low line cost, and flexible link invocation. It
is widely used in mountainous areas and underpopulated plains.
Compared with the terrestrial transmission, the main problem with the satellite transmission is
long delay, variation, and bit error. The Abis interface of common GSM equipment does not
support satellite transmission.
Huawei BSS supports satellite transmission on different interfaces such as A interface, Ater
interface, Abis interface, and PB interface.
5.1.2 Availability
All the versions of Huawei BSS support satellite transmission.
5.1.3 Restrictions
None.
The principle of the satellite transmission on the A interface, Ater interface, or PB interface is the same
as that on the Abis interface.

Station
Satellite
The satellite is usually a Geopause. It has the following features:
Earth Station
The earth station consists of antenna system, transmitter, receiver, channel terminal equipment
(modem), communication control, and power system.
For the terrestrial transmission, the interval between CHAN_ACT and CHAN_ACT_ACK is
very small. But for the satellite transmission, the MS has to wait for a long time to receive the
IMM_ASS_CMD from the BSS. To avoid long connection time or immediate assignment
failure due to this delay, the satellite transmission uses the immediate assignment
optimization.
After sending CHAN_ACT to the BTS, the BSC delivers IMM_ASS_CMD to the MS before
the BTS sends CHAN_ACT_ACK.
z Set MS MAX retrans to 4 to increase the times that the MS sends the channel request.
z Set Tx-integer to 32 to increase the transmission interval.
Voice Quality
The voice quality is not affected if the bit error rate is less than 1%10-6. Usually the bit error
rate in the satellite transmission is less than 1%10-8.
The BSS has no special processing for the satellite transmission on the A interface and Ater
interface.
Initial Configuration

Huawei recommends that the satellite circuit indication of the A interface should be consistent with the
MSC configuration.

Initial Configuration
The procedure for the initial configuration of the satellite transmission on the Abis interface is
as follows:
Step 1 On the data auto configuration system, select Initial Data Configuration Work Mode.
The BSC Data Auto Configuration System window is displayed.
Step 2 Select a site from the Object List on the left. In the Site Device tab page on the right, click
Site Property.
The Site Device Property dialog box as shown in Figure 5-12 is displayed.
Step 3 In the Site Description tab page, select Satellite Transmission from the Transmission Mode
drop-down list.

Dynamic Configuration
The procedure for the dynamic configuration of the satellite transmission on the Abis interface
is as follows:
Step 1 On the data auto configuration system, select System Dynamic Configuration Work Mode.
The BSC Data Auto Configuration System window is displayed.
The Modify Site Data dialog box as shown in Figure 5-13 is displayed.
The Site Device Property dialog box as shown in Figure 5-14 is displayed.
Step 5 In the Site Description tag page, select Satellite Transmission from the Transmission Mode
drop-down list.
Figure 5-14 Dynamic configuration of the satellite transmission on the Abis interface
When the Abis interface uses the satellite transmission, Huawei recommends that MS MAX retrans be
set to 4 and Tx-integer be set to 32. As the MS usually has to resend the channel request during satellite
transmission, more SDCCHs should be configured.
