5 Satellite Transmission Feature Description

5.1 Introduction

5.1.1 Application
Satellite transmission has a wide coverage area, low line cost, and flexible link invocation. It
is widely used in mountainous areas and underpopulated plains.

Compared with the terrestrial transmission, the main problem with the satellite transmission is
long delay, variation, and bit error. The Abis interface of common GSM equipment does not
support satellite transmission.

Huawei BSS supports satellite transmission on different interfaces such as A interface, Ater
interface, Abis interface, and PB interface.

5.1.2 Availability
All the versions of Huawei BSS support satellite transmission.

5.1.3 Restrictions
None.

5.2 Technical Description

5.2.1 Function Overview

The satellite transmission on the Abis interface is most widely used. The networking of
satellite transmission on the Abis interface uses star topology.

The principle of the satellite transmission on the A interface, Ater interface, or PB interface is the same
as that on the Abis interface.

Figure 5-1 shows the networking of satellite transmission.

Satellite transmission consists of the satellite and the earth station.

Satellite
The satellite is usually a Geopause. It has the following features:

z Its orbital plane is on the equatorial plane.

z Its distance to the ground surface is about 35786 km.
z Its running direction is the same as the direction of the earth rotation.
z Its revolution period around the earth equals the earth rotation period.
z It consists of control system, communication system (antenna and trunk), remote
supervision system, power system, and temperature system.

Earth Station
The earth station consists of antenna system, transmitter, receiver, channel terminal equipment
(modem), communication control, and power system.

z The earth station of common satellite communication is an international or European

standard communication station with a high transmission rate, wide antenna radius, and
high equipment cost. The user data is transmitted to the earth station through the
terrestrial communication network.
z The users of Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) use a private network and
communicate with each other through the satellite. This can reduce the equipment cost
and the antenna radius at the same time.

5 Satellite Transmission Feature Description

5.2.2 Satellite Transmission on the Abis Interface

Compared with the terrestrial transmission, the satellite transmission has a longer delay
during the information exchange. To avoid the faults due to delay increase, Huawei BSS uses
the immediate assignment optimization.

Immediate Assignment Optimization

In the immediate assignment process, the BSC sends the CHAN_ACT message to the BTS.
After receiving the CHAN_ACT_ACK from the BTS, the BSC delivers the IMM_ASS_CMD
to the MS.

For the terrestrial transmission, the interval between CHAN_ACT and CHAN_ACT_ACK is
very small. But for the satellite transmission, the MS has to wait for a long time to receive the
IMM_ASS_CMD from the BSS. To avoid long connection time or immediate assignment
failure due to this delay, the satellite transmission uses the immediate assignment
optimization.

After sending CHAN_ACT to the BTS, the BSC delivers IMM_ASS_CMD to the MS before
the BTS sends CHAN_ACT_ACK.

Impact of System Information

To avoid the delay impact and improve the access rate of the MS, set the property of satellite
transmission as follows:

z Set MS MAX retrans to 4 to increase the times that the MS sends the channel request.
z Set Tx-integer to 32 to increase the transmission interval.

LAPD Protocol Processing

In the processing of the LAPD protocol, increase the timing length of the timer and the value
range of the slide window.

BTS Clock Mode of Operation

The BTS clock usually follows the BSC clock. If the satellite equipment cannot ensure the
clock synchronization, the internal clock can be used.

Voice Quality
The voice quality is not affected if the bit error rate is less than 1%10-6. Usually the bit error
rate in the satellite transmission is less than 1%10-8.

5.2.3 Satellite Transmission on Other Interfaces

The link layer of the PB interface also uses the LAPD protocol. Therefore, the processing of
the LAPD link layer on the PB interface is the same as that on the Abis interface.

The BSS has no special processing for the satellite transmission on the A interface and Ater
interface.
