LAB SESSION 02

EXPERIMENT TITLE:

THE VERIFICATION OF THE HOOKS’S LAW BY USING THE COMPRESSION OF SPRING.

2.1 OBJECTIVES:

• To verify the hook’s law by using compression of spring.

2.2 THEORY:

Hook’s law: it is stated that relatively small deformations of an object,

the displacement or size of the deformation is directly proportional to the deforming force or load.
Under these conditions the object returns to its original shape and size upon removal of the load is
called as hooks law.

Mathematically, it can be written as;

𝐹 = 𝐾𝑥
K = proportionality constant

F= force or load

X= displacement

2.3 APPARATUS REQUIRED:

➢ Compression of spring apparatus

➢ Weight of different values

2.4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:

Firstly, set the apparatus at the wall or at the table.
Then, we remove the zero error in the reading, for the purpose of removing the zero error
meet the zero of both of the scale of the vernier scale and main scale and both scale zeros
position adjust by the screws behind the scales and remove the zero error.
After removing the zero error in the apparatus, then apply the small amount of load in
the hanger of the compression of the spring apparatus.
After applying the load in the apparatus, note the value of the displacement covered by
the spring by applying the stress.
The reading can be noted by the position of vernier scale at the main scale, that point of
the main scale will be noted whose will be meet to the zero of the vernier scale.
That reading note will be in the loading part (a) in calculation.
Apply different load in the hanger and note the value of the displacement.
After apply some different load then removing the load one by one from the hanger and
note this reading at the scale.
The unloading of load reading will be noted in the part (b) in the calculations.
Repeat the experiment for some different values and the take the mean of the loading (a)
and unloading(b) of the displacement covered by the spring.
Then, after taking some reading then find the value of the spring constant and proved
that within elastic limit the load is directly proportional to the displacement covered.

2.6 RESULT AND DISCUSSION:

by graph and calculation proved that within elastic limit the load is directly proportional to the
displacement and when load is remove than spring move to its original position. It will be the hook
law that will be proved experimentally

2.7 PRECAUTIONS:

Wear safety goggles to prevent any accidents that could occur due to the weights bouncing
off the spring.
Keep a distance from the apparatus.
