A. Direction: Read the story about a company known by the public as “Apple” and answer the
questions below in 2 – 3 sentences. 5 points each question.
Apple, beginning with its “Think Different” campaign, developed an imagined community of users
centered originally on its founder, Steve Jobs, and its innovations. When Apple was about to introduce a
new product, people would line about at its stores hours before they opened and then high-five the
sales clerks as they paid out hundreds of dollars for a device. That’s an imagined community (Manaiza,
2019).

Processing Questions:

1. Are you familiar with the “Apple” company mentioned in the story? If yes, How did you know
about it? If not, Why?

 Yes, I am familiar with the Apple because it is very popular around the world and a lot of people
using it. I had known apple because I have friends, family, relatives also using this product
furthermore I have seen it in the internet or advertisements.

2. When you read about the story about “Apple”, how did you feel about it? Do you feel think you
can belong in this so-called imagined community? Why or Why not?

 As I read the story about apple I was amazed how it affects the consumers to purchase the said
products. I don’t think that I can be part of this so called imagined community because I
belong to a lower class who can’t afford to purchased such products and belong to the
community of apple users

3. If your answer is “Yes”, then, that is good. Now, please think of another imagined community
where you can belong to. Why? But if your answer is “No”, then can you think of an imagined
community where you can be a part of? Why?

 My answer is No and I think the imagine community where I can be part of is the social media
because it creates a sense of community for individuals who would otherwise feel isolated in
mainstream society or feel afraid to express their views. I belong to a community who uses
social media to express my feelings and insights toward something.

B. Direction: Write an essay how can the “Nation” become an imagined community during this time
of the pandemic in 5 – 10 sentences. Please try to be open-minded and be specific when you give
example situations in explaining your point of view. (10 points)

We all probably agree that COVID-19 pandemic has been ruining our plans and even lives in
general. Most of our activities are limited and our connections with friends, family and even the loved
ones are at risk. If this pandemic lasts long enough, our new generations will eventually get used to the
way of we are living now, such as alienating ourselves from people, being more self-centered, or
perhaps not needing any real connections with ‘real’ people.

The community "is imagined because the members of even the smallest nation will never know
most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the
image of their communion,” (Aderson 1991). Even at this time of pandemic our nation could still be an
imagined community. In our increasingly connected and globalised world, the internet provides us with
a shared digital culture that allows us to communicate with one another across the globe. Example we
have the social media to be the key medium of communication as we all know that at this time of
pandemic we have limitations and we are not able to do what we want to do especially having physical
contact with frien, family or relatives. Connectivity is central to modern life and social media is at the
heart of creating a sense of closeness and proximity. And with that we create our nation to an imagined
community.

Therefore, we as the member of the nation could work together and support our government’s
efforts to reestablish our beloved country, so that everything will be back to normal, do things and
experience what we used to experienced before and ended as the ‘imagined’.
