<Before Ballast Operation>


1. Have the weather and sea conditions in the operating area been checked?

2. Has an exchange plan which takes into account the minimum required GoM which
is considered with free surface effects and strength of the hull at every state been
provided?

3. Has the Master confirmed and approved the plan before the operation?

4. Has the communication procedure to be used during the operation been


confirmed?

5. Is there a proper distribution of crew members?

6. Has training in ballast management to applicable crew members been carried out,
and has this been recorded?

7. Have each country’s regulations about ballast management been confirmed?

8. Have stability and BM/SF been monitored during Ballast Exchange operation and
are values within the limitation?

9. Have Ballast Exchange logs, stability and strength calculation sheets, past
reporting records and relevant training records been kept?

10. Has Ballast Water Management Plan been well understood?

11. Has the admissible weather conditions on passage seasonable affected been
considered?

12. Has a responsible person checked all functions (e.g. valves, pumps, line up and
sequence setting) before conducting ballast exchange operation?

13. Has draft condition been supervised by responsible person continuously?

14. Has any ballast exchange operation been supervised by responsible person
continuously?

15. Has the level of ballast tank without operation been checked regularly?

16. Have the ballast tanks adjacent to bunker tanks been visually checked for oil
contamination before the operation?

a. with use of oil finding paste or

In case there are other checking items, the Master may supplement here with his sign.

During Ballast Water Exchange Operation the following items should be taken into account:
1. To be agreed who will be responsible for the exchange operation as duty officer, watch relieve
must be informed.
2. Ballast Console (CCR) should not be left unattended while the ballast pump(s) and stripping pump
are in use.
3. Agreed Communication system shall be set up and know by the officer/engineers.
4. Duty Officer in CCR must clearly inform to Bridge and OOW should report to the master/ECR after
completion of ballast exchange operation.
