1 Introduction
The 404B Infrared Phototach can be powered directly from an AMS 2140
Machinery Health Analyzer with the cable provided in the package. The
optional 408 battery pack may also be used with the 404B Infrared Phototach
for extended use.
The 404B Infrared Phototach can only be connected directly to the AMS 2140
Machinery Health Analyzer via the required tach cable purchased from
Emerson. See the AMS 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer User Manual for
more information.

1.2 Overview
This document describes the basic connections and set up for the 404B
Infrared Phototach. Refer to the AMS 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer User
Guide for detailed instructions for data collection.

Note
If the phototach has been exposed to hazardous substances, a Material
Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be included with the returned materials. An
MSDS is required by law to be available to people exposed to specific
hazardous substances.

Procedure
A. Power switch
2. The power switch has three positions: On (left), Off (middle), and Battery
Test (right). Press the power switch to the right to test the battery. A
successful battery test is indicated by a red light. If the light shows red,
then the battery pack has a charge. If the light does not show red, the
battery needs to be charged.

Note
The current model of the 408 battery pack uses six NiMH batteries. Older
models of the 408 battery pack use NiCad batteries. If the battery pack
cannot properly be charged, these batteries may need to be replaced.
Batteries must be replaced by Emerson. See the Return of Materials
section in this manual for more information.
CAUTION!
The 408 battery pack should be charged before first use.
Note
A wiring diagram is provided on the back of the 408 battery pack for quick
reference.

Quick Start Guide June 2018
Procedure
1. Find the appropriate power cable for your use in your country.
2. Connect the smaller end of the power charger cable to the connector
labeled CHARGER on the 408 battery pack.
Note
The power charger may not insert completely into the 408 battery pack.
This is normal and should not cause concern.

3. Plug the power cable into an AC wall socket. Allow two hours for
complete charging.

Quick Start Guide June 2018
• Connect the 404B Infrared Phototach to the AMS 2140 using the 408 battery
pack
• Connect the 404B Infrared Phototach to the AMS 2140 without using the
408 battery pack
Procedure
1. If the 408 battery pack has been charged, you may remove the power
cable. It is not needed since the 408 battery pack will be running off of
battery power.
2. Connect the 404B Infrared Phototach cable to the INPUT connector on
the 408 battery pack by turning it clockwise until tightened.

3. The appropriate cable for use with the AMS 2140 has a BNC connector on
one end and an eight pin Turck connector on the other end. Connect the
Turck connector to the VOLTS/TACH connector on the AMS 2140
Machinery Health Analyzer.
4. Connect the BNC connector on the other end of the cable to the OUTPUT
connector on the 408 battery pack. Turn the BNC connector clockwise
until you feel it click into place. At that point the cable is connected.
5. Turn the power switch on the 408 battery pack to the ON position by
pushing the power switch to the left.
6. The infrared light on the 404B Infrared Phototach is illuminated.

Note
If you are attaching the magnetic mount to equipment that is not grounded,
there is a possibility of producing a ground loop (electrical) problem that will
cause the 404B Infrared Phototach to become unstable.
1. Place the reflective tape provided with the package on the shaft of the
equipment to be analyzed. If the surface of the shaft is shiny or of a
reflective nature, the 404B Infrared Phototach will capture false readings.
Paint the shaft on the area surrounding the attached tape with a darker,
non-reflective color.
2. Position the 404B Infrared Phototach perpendicular to the reflective tape.
If a pulse is not detected, change the angle of the 404B Infrared Phototach to
10 to 15 degrees off a line perpendicular to the reflective tape.
If the 404B Infrared Phototach signals are erratic, you may need to adjust the
gain on the 404B Infrared Phototach:
1. Remove the screw holding the clear plastic cover on the rear of the yellow
tach head.
2. Ensure that the L.O.\D.O. control is in the full counterclockwise position.
MHM-97921, Rev 0 17
Quick Start Guide June 2018
If you still have erratic signals after making these adjustments, back out the
gain control another full turn or more until you obtain a satisfactory signal.
Note
Refer to the Balancing chapter of the AMS 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer
User Manual for more operating instructions for the 404B Infrared Phototach.
