Introduction
The requirem ent t o convert from one hardness t est scale t o anot her is quit e com m on and as such is covered by various
Int ernat ional St andards (ASTM E140, ISO 18265). These st andards point out t hat , due t o t he differences in t he various t ypes
of hardness t est m et hods, it is not possible t o show a const ant conversion relat ionship across all m at erials. As such, t he
st andards provide approxim at e conversions only wit h defined hardness ranges and t est loads for specific m at erials. Thus
t here are a num ber of conversion t ables according t o m at erial t ype and it is essent ial t o use t he correct one. The following
conversion chart s have been const ruct ed according t o t he hardness t est scale conversion algorit hm s provided wit hin ASTM
E140. Please t reat all convert ed values as approxim at ions only.
The t able below list s t he scales present in t he following t ables and any rest rict ions on t he load ranges valid for t he
conversions.
A com m only asked quest ion is "How com e m y result s and t hose from anot her facilit y are different ?" The first st ep is t o use
st at ist ical analysis t o see if t he difference is significant . Next , det erm ine any differences in t he t est m et hod. The t wo m ost
com m on problem s relat e t o eit her a different load being applied or a convert ed value being com pared wit h an act ual
m easurem ent . For t his reason, it is recom m ended t hat t he m easured value is included in parent hesis following t he
conversion when report ing a convert ed hardness num ber.
In addit ion t o st eel balls, t ungst en carbide balls have been int roduced for Rockwell and Rockwell Superficial scales. However,
all of t he equat ions applied t o creat e values for t he t ables in t his docum ent are based on em pirical t est accom plished wit h
st eel indent ers. A Rockwell hardness t est done wit h a t ungst en carbide ball m ay yield slight ly different result s.
