Fish is considered as one of the God Vishnu’s first incarnation in india mythology as in –“ Mastyas
Awatara “ mention in puransa and upanisas .

In early india art, symbol and motif derived from water cosmology depicts the fish as beautiful and
attractive animal .

A Religious tradition

At the same time , fish and meat were perceived as particularly impure, soiled by the act of slaughter.
vegetarianism was practiced by the Brahmin aste and was at the top of the hierarchy of dietary regimes.

Victory of good over Evil

In a typical Bengali household , meat held a great significance in married women,s life in the ancient
times . a widow, on the other hand , had to abstain from eating fish and meat .it is believed that no
married women was allowed to leave the house without being offered fish and rice .

welcome maa durga to her maternal home with the traditional authentic nengali food that includes fish ,

SOCIO- ECONOMIC STATUS

India fisheries sector plays an important role in the socio economic development of the country, in view
of its potential contribution to national income , nutritional security , employment opportunities, social
objective and and export earning . Fishes are the major source of animal protein providing 80% of the
animal protein intake and 7% of total protein supplies.

 To provide an overall picture of the structure, activities, and standards of living of small-scale fishing
communities and households as a background to a more in-depth analysis at a later stage.
 To compare the standards of living of small-scale fishing households to those of other comparable
socioeconomic groups (e.g., farmers), and to the national average to determine their relative
positions in the national economy and establish whether government intervention to upgrade their
position is needed.
 To identify factors that account for differences in standards of living among small-scale fishing
households themselves and between them and other socioeconomic groups so that policy
implications are arrived at and effective policies for assistance and development can be formulate
and recommended.
 among all export commodities behind garments, jute and leather. Shrimp represents 90% of these
exports

Aquaculture

Many of the problems faced by small-scale fishermen are common to small-scale fish farmers.
Aquaculture holds the promise of becoming a viable alternative to capture fisheries. Given the
increasing depletion of fish from natural resources and the rising employment and income needs of
small scale fishermen and other socioeconomic groups, aquaculture's potential contribution toward
better nutrition, additional employment, and higher incomes, also towards better utilization of marginal
lands, cannot be disregarded. The development of aquaculture may be beneficial provided
socioeconomic aspects receive due attention in planning the promotion of aquaculture.

Socioeconomics of Coastal Aquaculture

Costal aquaculture consists mainly of brackish water , extremely favourable resources and conditions:
availability of warm temperature throughout the year, fertile pond soils, favourable water salinity levels
and cheap labour. However, these favourable resources and conditions have not been optimally used.

 The potential benefits of The brackish water aquaculture for the rural poor: particularly as an
employment option to the displaced fishermen and fishing communities of the country.
 The employment opportunities of the new shrimp farming system: especially for rural women,
in seed collection, catching fish on farms, deweeding, earth and brickwork for farm use, work in
depots and processing.
 Its role in the improvement of nutrition and socioeconomic upliftment in fish-farming
communities.
 If benefits of shrimp farming could be extended to small farmers through organizing and pooling
their resources for shrimp culture instead of leasing their land to large farmers. (At present most
of the benefits are enjoyed by large shrimp farmers who are generally city dwellers, alien to the
area, and get the land on lease from small land owners to operate large shrimp farms).
 The role of NGOs in assisting to organize small farmers for shrimp culture.

GENDER STATUS AT FISH MARKET

We are living at this era of time where we have seen progression of gender equality in almost every
sector from business to political field .women are equally participating with men in every sector but ,
there are many sector are remaining in which occurance of women are very common The socio-
economic status of market functionaries is given . It is found that fish trading is only undertaken by male
(100%), this shows women do not have significant role in fish marketing. The age of the respondents
was examined using four categories (50 years). age group 41-50 years had the highest proportion
(36.67%) of the respondents, followed by age group 21-40 years with 30%. In case of family size of
respondents it was found that the majority of respondents (93.33%) had their family size >members.
This is an indicative of heavy dependency of the people for their livelihood who involved in fish
marketing. This implies that majority of the fish marketers in selected market had higher
secondary/junior high school level of education.
