Abstract:

Now a day’s green library concept is very popular. Libraries that store a variety of
materials as a collection must be made environmentally friendly in order to be
long-lasting and safe for the environment. The study highlights the transformation
of modern library into green library. The purpose of the study is to examine the
awareness level of green library and find out the initiatives which are taken by the
central library of Indian statistical institutes. For the study, a survey method has
been adopted and questionnaire used as a data collection tools.

Introduction

A "green library" is library, one that uses eco-friendly construction methods,

biodegradable products, careful site selection, responsible waste disposal,
recycling, and other methods to lessen its negative effects on the environment and
improve the quality of the environment inside the building.

According to ODLIS, "green library is library which minimizes the negative

impact on the environment and maximizes the indoor environment quality with the
help of careful site selection, natural construction materials, conservation of water,
energy, paper and waste disposal etc".
According to IFLA,” A green or Sustainable library is a library which takes into
account environment, economic and social sustainability”.

According to New world encyclopedia, “Green Library, also known as a

sustainable library, it is built with environment concerns in mind and libraries are
the part of larger green building movement.”

Green Library Norms/ Standards

 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

 Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (COSTFORD
 Habitat technology group (HTG)
 Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method
(BREEM)
 GRIHA ( Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)
 Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)

Review of literature

Gaffer et.al.(2021) reveal the green library initiatives in India perspective. This
study shows that the green library construction and awareness level of users
regarding green library, including the role of librarian, features and initiatives of

Chudhary Braham Prakash Ayurved charak Sansthan, New Delhi, IIM, Silchar and
The Energy Research Institute (TERI).

Objectives of the Study

 To know the awareness level of green library in library professionals.

 The Indian statistical institutes adopting green library infrastructure.
 ISI libraries are making strategies for promotion of green library

Research Methodology

For the study survey method has been used, applying upon the librarian using the
standardized online questionnaire. Data was received and analyzed using MS excel
and MS word.

Scope of the Study

The study centered only for librarian to understand green library perspectives,
awareness and strategies. Study is concerned only two institutes: 1. Indian
Statistical Institute, Kolkata 2. Indian statistical Institute, Chennai.

Data Analysis and Interpretation

Adoption of green initiative in their work

Central library, ISI, Kolkata

Central library, ISI, Chennai

Table.1
The above table and checklist shows that the central library of ISI, Kolkata
adopted green initiative in their work (51-75%) while ISI, Chennai (26-50%). So
we can say that ISI Kolkata has started the process of adopting green initiative
whereas ISI Chennai has adopted it to some extent only.

courses were also being run, digital resources were being provided to the users
and library promotes 3R system in library.

Conclusion
The libraries of the Indian statistical institute are giving their full contribution in
saving mother earth. Libraries are working to popularize the "green concept" and
educate people through the tools those their patrons use, including publications,
exhibitions and green teams related to green libraries. The University Grants
Commission has also given approval for greening of all colleges and universities,
the government should provide financial assistance for greening the libraries so
that the library can also make its full contribution in sustainable development
