What is Adolescence?
 this occurs between childhood
and adulthood
 begins at around age 10 and
ends around age 21
 it has three stages with
different characteristics
• Early adolescence
(ages 10 to 13)
• Middle adolescence
(ages 14 to 16)
• Late adolescence
(ages 17 to 20)

1. Early Adolescence
• occurs from ages 10 to 13
• puberty stage usually begins
• sexual curiosity
• shows acting-out behaviours
• close friends are more
important than families

• occurs from ages 14 to 16
• extremely concerned on
how they look
• worry about sexual
attractiveness
• asserting own’s
independence
• intense focus on peer
groups
• acting-out behaviour is
lessen

• occurs from ages 17 to 20
• firmer identity
• ability to delay
gratification
• ability to make
independent decisions
• higher level of concern for
the future

acquisition of basic virtues.

Failure to successfully
complete a stage can result
in a reduced ability to
complete further stages
and therefore a more
unhealthy personality and
sense of self.
Trust VS Mistrust
Infancy (From birth

feel secure even when
threatened
• success on this stage will lead
to the virtue of Hope
• failing in this stage may lead
to development of Fear
Autonomy VS Shame &

Ego Identity VS Role Confusion

relationships can lead to
isolation, loneliness, and
sometimes Depression.
• Success in this stage will
lead to the virtue of Love.
Generativity VS Stagnation
Adulthood (From 25
to 65 years old)
• settling down with a
relationship
•being involved in
community activities
• success in this stage will
lead to the virtue of Care
• failure in this stage will
make a person Feel
unproductive
Integrity VS Despair
Maturity (From 65
• slowing down their and above)
productivity
• exploring life as a retired
person
• contemplating with
accomplishments
• success in this stage will
develop the virtue of
Wisdom
• failure in this stage will lead
to Hopelessness
