Since, everyone is familiar about what communication is, described the different verbal and non-
verbal pictures. Now, let’s dig deeper on what communication is.
Pre-Assessment Questions
● What is communication? (Define)
1. The communication process is the formation of the message or idea that you want to convey to your
audience.
2. Conveying the message - Once the idea is created and the audience has been selected, then you must convey
the message.
3. Message Reception - Once the message has been transmitted to the chosen recipient through the chosen
medium, the recipient then determines what it mean to him/her.
4. Interpretation - This follows after the reception. Once the message was received, the recipient then
determines what it mean to him/her.
5. Response and Feedback - The recipient of the message interprets the information and then formulates an
appropriate response. The response depends largely upon the extent to which the message was heard or seen
and whether or not it was properly interpreted.
Non-Verbal Communication
● Ways of talking (e.g pauses, stress in words)
● Posture (e.g slouching)
● Appearance (e.g untidiness)
● Head Movement (e.g nodding)
● Hand Movement (e.g waving)
● Eye Movements (e.g winkling)
● Facial Expression (e.g frown)
● Body Contact (e.g shaking hands)
● Closeness (e.g invading someone’s space)
● Sounds (e.g laughing)
Errors in Communication
Communication that is poorly expressed may result to misunderstanding. It can create tention and ill feelings
among people.
⮚ Making Assumptions - To make an assumption is to think of something as true without proof. An important
aspect of good communication is to be sincere and honest to others about what we are thinking.
⮚ Avoiding Communications - Communication problems often arise because we do not say how we feel, what
we think and what we want.
⮚ Labeling - To label someone is to give someone a word or phrase according to how we think of them as
revealed through their actions. Labeling often leads to quarrels because the labels we give to others, especially
when we are angry, are negative and offensive words.
⮚ Alienating Messages - This is the use of negative words, critical of another person. When both persons use
this kind of messages, no one wins, and everybody feels bad.
One effective ways of communication is to use the whole or open messages. This is especially useful when you
need to raise an issue that is difficult to talk about or one that makes you uncomfortable.
Whole Message consists of four parts.
1. Observation - Describe what happened.
2. Thoughts - State your belief, opinions or interpretation of what happened based on your observation.
3. Feelings - Say how you feel about the situation.
4. Wants - Talk about what you would like to happen in the situation.
