Philosophy of Education

The purpose of education cannot be defined in one simple sentence. There are

many reasons why education is so important and has such a great purpose for

students. According to Dr. Sweetland, the main purpose of education is, “to provide the

opportunity for acquiring knowledge and skills that will enable people to develop their

full potential, and become successful members of society” (Homebob.com). Becoming

successful members of society includes a wide range of qualities that are taught in the

education system. The education system does not only teach students curriculum and

subject matter. A good education system teaches students time management, critical

thinking, problem solving, perseverance, collaboration, and the ability to get along with

others.

Curriculum

Curriculum provides teachers with a guideline of what is essential for teaching

and learning. Classroom curriculum should always align with Common Core State

Standards. Assessments provide feedback for teachers of what students are learning.

Through formative assessment, teachers use information about student achievement to

adjust instruction to improve student learning. Teachers use this information to adapt

and support learning in their classrooms. Formative assessment is the bridge between

teaching and learning and gives teachers a way to measure what has been taught and

what students have learned. Assessments are done throughout the day and at the end

of lessons.
Students’ Role

The students' role in education is to be on time and be open to exploring new

ideas, concepts, and learning. Students should have mutual respect for each other.

Students should be attentive listeners who listen to each other with not only their ears

and eyes but also their heart. Students should be active in their learning environment

and provide a space to think outside the box and encouragement for each other to grow.

Teacher’s Role

The role of the teacher in the classroom is to establish a positive culture for

learning and student development. Students should feel safe and be encouraged to

explore ideas that are different. Teachers should provide a variety of ways and

opportunities for students to receive and process information. Teachers need to be able

to adjust lessons and activities to reach each student in their classroom.

Role of the Community

The role of the community is to support student growth by providing facilities that

can accommodate all students in the district. Schools should have access to technology

and resources that are needed to be current for students' learning. Newspapers should

highlight student success academically, in sports, in STEM, and through the arts.

Classroom Culture

Respect and community is very important for the culture of my classroom. As a

class, we will create a road map of what is important in our culture and how we will work

together and support each other to fulfill each of our greatest potential. Students will be

encouraged to expand their thinking. I will use the mild, medium and spicy levels to

represent ideas. Mild is pretty basic, obvious ideas. Medium is starting to warm up
some. It is ideas and thinking that is not so obvious. Spicy level is mind blowing! It is

ideas that are completely out of the box. These will be what we will be looking at to

explore and collaborate on as a classroom.

Method of Teaching

My preferred method of teaching and learning is the method that works the best

for the class that I am teaching. I will always offer a variety of ways for students to

receive and learn information as well as a variety of ways for them to demonstrate their

mastery of the material. I believe in differentiated instruction and differentiation in

students' assessments. Students will be encouraged to work outside their comfort zone

and try new ways of learning. As a class we will work a lot through collaboration and in

small groups. There will be many hands-on activities to get students engaged and out of

their seats. No two days will look the same as we will constantly be changing and

adjusting to how the class is learning and what is sparking their interest.

My goal is to help each student find their voice, instill confidence, a desire to

learn, and ultimately become a critical thinker, a problem solver, and someone who is

not intimidated or afraid of whatever challenges life may bring.
