My Philosophy of Education

Mia Davis

The purpose of Education is to help students understand basic principles of knowledge,

which are the foundation of our society. It is my belief that education goes beyond principles of

knowledge; learning shapes who we are throughout life. The idea of being lifelong learners is

one I whole-heartedly embrace and promote. A great way to create lifelong learners is to

challenge students to be active participants in their education from an early age. Facilitating a

love for learning is one of my main goals as an educator. The best way to achieve this goal is to

use my classroom to further develop students’ intrinsic drive to explore, question, and expand

their knowledge. This can be promoted by providing lessons that focus on student-inquiry,

hands-on activities, and cater to student interest.

Every student is a different person with different learning needs. It is

important for teachers to adapt and accommodate for students. Especially entering high school

teachers must prepare for all different backgrounds and knowledge. Differentiation is a great way

to cater to individual student needs, while engaging students based on their learning style.

Students must feel supported in their learning process. Throughout my experience as a student

and a teacher, I have heard several people say, “I am just bad at science.” I will work toward

breaking that learning myth in my classroom. By showing students there is no “bad” or “good”

in learning, I will always encourage them to grow from their own personal abilities. By

recognizing student learning styles and abilities, it allows for an environment where students feel

seen. Students need a safe learning environment to grow and

succeed. Teachers are the facilitators of the classroom and its environment. Creating a space for

all students to learn in can be achieved by maintaining structure, clearly stating expectations,
incorporating students into the classroom, and acting as a supportive role. Teacher and

community support are such a huge contribution to a student’s learning. As a teacher it is

important to involve the community in education. Communicating with parents or being an

active community member outside the classroom are ways show support to students.

As a teacher, it is my job to offer a

supportive learning environment that caters to all students, while promoting students to embrace

being lifelong learners.
