Lesson Plan in Language Attitudes

First Semester

School DON CARLOS POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

Learning Area Sociolinguistics

A. Content Standard The learner will gain understanding on how language attitudes shape the
communication process through time. Approaches governing this principle such
as semantic shift, semantic derogation, social identity theory, and communication
accommodation theory will be mastered by students to effectively communicate
be it in a verbal or non-verbal manner.

B. Performance The students will be able to assess and create a brochure regarding language
Standard shift in their locality through applying the approaches that contributes to how a
certain language is viewed.

C. Learning Examines the importance of language attitudes in both cognitive and


Competencies sociopyschological theories of second language acquisition.

Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Describe what language attitude is;
2. differentiate the approaches governing language attitudes; and
3. create a brochure that showcases the importance of understanding
language attitudes in the language shift observed in their locality.

Materials: Projector and laptop

III. PROCEDURES
 Greetings and formalities, prayer, checking of attendance.
a. Before the Lesson  Teacher will group the students into three (3) for a game to introduce the
new lesson.

Instruction: There will be three (3) pieces of paper containing words


such as; English, Bisaya, Illongo. Each will be tasked to create a two-
minute skit of them arguing using the language that they have picked.
They will be given three (3) minutes to prepare.

 The students will be asked these questions after the presentation.


1. What language do you prefer to use when you are overwhelmed with
emotion? Why?
2. How does ones language affect communication?
 Students will be randomly picked by the teacher. After the question and
answer, teacher will introduce the lesson.
b. During the Lesson  The teacher will define language attitudes and deliberately explain the
approaches governing it.

Language Attitudes- the thoughts, ideas, and prejudices that speakers


hold towards a language.

Approaches:
Semantic Shift- evolution of word usage.
Semantic Derogation- meaning shift in which words take on more
negative connotations or denotations.
Social Identity Theory- self personality in social interaction.
Communication Accommodation Theory
1. Convergence- speaker adjusts language features for the
listener.
2. Divergence-takes an opposite direction from the convergence.

 Teacher will provide examples of the approaches introduced in class


through a PowerPoint presentation.
 The teacher will then ask questions to prompt students’ understanding of
the lesson and to make sure they are ready for the evaluation.

c. After the Lesson 1. Evaluation


 In the same group, students will create a brochure regarding language
shift in their locality through applying the approaches that contributes to
how a certain language is viewed.

Students will be graded according to:


Content- 15 points
Written presentation- 13 points
Visual appeal- 12 points
Total- 40 points

2. Enrichment Activity
 Observe a particular indigenous family in your locality. Describe their
attitude towards their language by examining how the concepts of
convergence and divergence is applied with regards to their attitude on
their own indigenous language.

Criteria:
Content- 10 points
Coherence- 4 points
Grammar- 6 points
Total- 20 points
