Why Are Statistics Necessary In Psychology?
Psychologists depend completely on statistics to help evaluate the meaning of the
measurements they make. Measurements involve statistics give detail of general
properties of groups, people or animals.
psychologist may interpret test results in light of norms, or the typical results,
provided from previous testing.
In research, psychologists use two kinds of statistics, descriptive and inferential.
Descriptive statistics simply give a usual picture of the scores in a given group.
They include the measures of central tendency and the measures of variability.
Descriptive statistics allow psychologists to summarize data related to human
performance, happiness, and other metrics.
Central tendency, Different kinds of averages: the mean, median and mode.
Variability involves the standard deviation, which shows how far scores in a
group there is likely to be from the average.
Inferential statistics are used to help psychologists draw inferences, or
conclusions, from the data obtained from their research. The most common
statistical tests include the student's T-test and the Analysis of Variance (or F-
test); these statistics help the psychologist assess whether the differences in
averages across groups are due to the effects of an independent variable.
Another mass used inferential statistic is the correlation coefficient, which
describes the strength of the relationship between two variables. For example,
there is a positive correlation between a student were score on the (SAT) and
his/her grades in the first year of college.
Correlations involve patterns that exist in groups; individuals within those
groups may not perform in the manner the correlation predicts that they will, but
if large numbers of students were tested, general trends may be detected.
Psychology students realize that statistics courses are required for graduation.
You will encounter the subject in many of your other classes, specially those that
involve experimental design or research methods. Succeed in psychology, you
not only need to be able to pass a statistics class.
You need to be able to master statistics also. Statistics let us to make sense and
interpret a great deal of information. How many students in your class ate
breakfast this morning? In statistics we can put in order and interpret
information in a meaningful way. In psychology, we also face with huge amounts
of data. How do changes in one variable impact other variables?
There was a way we can measure the relationship.
Measure strength of relationship and mean.
Statistics allow psychologists to:
Organise data:
Dealing with an huge amount of information, it is all too easy to become over
burden. Statistics let psychologists to present data in ways that are easier to take
in. Visual displays such as graphs, pie charts, frequency distribution and
scatterplots allow researchers to get a better overview of data and look for
patterns they might otherwise miss.
Describe data:
Regression models allow psychologists to quantify the relationship between
variables related to human performance, happiness, and other metrics.
Researchers collect a great deal of information about a group of people, for
example, the U.S. Census. Descriptive statistics put up a way to summarize facts,
such as how many men and women there are, how many children there are, or
how many people are currently employed.
Make inferences based on data:
Using known as inferential statistics, researchers can infer things about a given
sample or population. Psychologists use the data they have collected to test a
hypothesis. Using statistical analysis, researchers can determine the likelihood
that a hypothesis should be either accepted or rejected.
Hypothesis tests allow psychologists to compare the effectiveness of different
methods, techniques, and procedures on human performance, happiness, and
other metrics.
Statistics Can Help You
statistical methods can help you top in almost all other classes. Whether taking
social psychology or human sexuality, you’ll spend time learning about research.
Statistical knowledge will let you to make better sense of the research. You'll find
to narrate in your other psychology courses. Research process, including the
kinds of statistical analyses that were used. you will be able to become a wise
client psychology information and make good judgments of the information you
come across. Knowledge of statistics, you can make better decisions about your
health and well-being.
