1 The Basics of Media and Information Literacy
The basic of MIL is communication.
There are many ways nowadays to get and bring information, unlike before. Technology
is now both a blessing, and a curse.

1.1 Platform
A medium where we communicate. Example, social media platform.

1.2 Media, Information, and Technology Literacy


Interconnected to achieve one goal. That is to communicate.

1.2.1 Media
A tool to deliver information. Various mediums.

1.2.2 Information
Knowledge. It’s information that we can access and deliver.

1.2.3 Communication
Process of exchanging information.

1. Linear Model of Communication


One way communication. Mother of all models.

2. Transactional Model of Communication


There is an exchange of information now. The most important element here is feedback.

2 MIL Essential Competencies


2.1 Media Literacy
Access, analyze, or evaluae and create media. The ability to access, analyze or evaluate, and create
media in a a variety of forms.

2.2 Information Literacy


An Information Literate person can recognize, locate, evaluate, and communicate information.

2.3 Technology / Digital Literacy


A Technology or Digital Literate person if skillful, knowledgeable, and engaged in online
activities.

3 Evolution of Media
Do Your Part

1. A person highly exposed to media is a highly media-literate individual: False.

2. In the ancient times, people were not able to communicate effectively (What do we mean
bycommunicating effectively?): False.

3. The print medium revolutionized the literacy of human beings: True.

4. The TV is the most powerful medium in history (said by McLuhan): False. ”TV may be a
powerful medium but not the most powerful medium.” Because why there is the need to invent
another medium when we could’ve stopped there.

3.1 Tribal Age


Also declared to be the first age. It is characterized by the prevalence of oral communication.
(NOTE: Oral communication is only done face to face.) And the dominant sense is auditory.
The message can be added and the message can be lessened through oral communication.

3.2 Age of Literacy


Prevalance of communcation: Writing.
People began to communicate through writing; from which writing formed a linear
communication that made the communication in this era ineffective.

3.3 Print Age


Prevalence of Communication: Books (A kind of printed media)
Those who are in the higher/elite class can only afford books and magazine; it’s prevalent but
it costs much.
Industrial Age bloomed because of the introduction of the handicrafts mechanization.

3.4 Electronic Age


Prevalence of Communication: Through Television
McLuhan’s time. He said television was the newest form of media that’s why he said TV is
the most powerful medium.
This age removes the role of print media and physical platform (books, magazines, and tangible
medium.); computers and laptops are beginning to develop.

3.5 New Media or Information Age


Everything that happens today especially the technology advancement.

Not all available resources are there; research must be done.

How you organize your gathered information.

• ethics and responsibility of use Determines what is know and right.

An information-literate individual knows to communicate effectively.

• how to manage your findings How could you relate it to your audience?

4 The Advantages of Media and Literacy Education


MIL is both content era and way of both teaching and learning. You are there to disseminate
information. You can also examine, even scrutinize, the information you’ve gotten from the
internet.
The media today is prevalent and information can no longer be denied. And, if you become
media and information literate person, you will have the power to control to deliver your
message.

4.1 Citizenship and Media and Information Literacy Education


Digital Citizenship (2016) provides us with some useful discussion on ideal situations and the things
to be done that requires the several domains of information technology behavior.

4.2 Digital Access


This is how an individual participate in the digitized world. how you navigate your devices.

4.3 Digital Communication


Any communication with the use of technology.

4.4 Digital Commerce/Market


buying, paying, selling online.

4.5 Digital Etiquette / Netiquette
Ethics. This about the commonly regarded as appropriate and respectful manner/behavior when
using information technologies.

4.6 Digital Wellness


This covers the protection of users from what could be potentially deleterious to their physical,
physiological, and even psychological well-being.

4.7 Digital Security


Privacy. This area covers the entire gamut of safety precautions that information technologies invoke
– from virus protection to data protection.

4.8 Digital Law


4.8.1 Magna Carta for Philippine Internet Freedom
• Free Expression - If you engage yourself with that activity, expect others will do the same.
Youshould know how to express yourself well.

• Universal Access - Promotes nationwide the use of internet.

• Innovation - Progress/development in technology.

• Right to Privacy - Self-explanatory.

• Intellectual property - Your products. Things that you made.
