6 Reading and writing

It’s June 3rd and for children all over the Philippines, it’s
the first day of the school year. They’re wearing their
clean school uniforms: white shirts with skirts, shorts,
or pants. Their hair is tidy and their faces are clean and
happy. They’re excited to start school. But some of these
children have a very difficult journey from their homes to
their schools. So how are they getting there today?

Abel has a very difficult journey. His school is at the


top of a mountain. There aren’t any cars or buses to
take him to school, so he walks for about two hours.
