6 Reading and writing

It’s June 3rd and for children all over the Philippines, it’s
the first day of the school year. They’re wearing their
clean school uniforms: white shirts with skirts, shorts,
or pants. Their hair is tidy and their faces are clean and
happy. They’re excited to start school. But some of these
children have a very difficult journey from their homes to
their schools. So how are they getting there today?

Abel has a very difficult journey. His school is at the

Mae lives on one side of a river and her school is on the
other side. There aren’t any boats to take her to school,
so later she’s meeting her friends to walk through
the river together! For Hal, it’s a journey on his dad’s
motorcycle. This morning, his father is driving him, his
mom, and his three brothers – all at the same time!

take him to school, so he walks for about two hours.
During the journey, he and his friends often encounter
dangerous animals. But they are usually more worried
about their shoes getting dirty!
In the Philippines, school is very important for all kids.
For children like Mae, Hal, and Abel, their journeys to
school are dangerous, but a good education means a
better future.
